Re: THE GREAT UILLEANN YOU-TUBE THREAD.

A friend shared this with me recently. Peter McKenna and Tadhg Mulligan. Lovely stuff.

ITM or piping podcasts?

Any suggestions for good ITM podcasts, ideally with some focus on uilleann piping? RTE radio used to have some good shows like the Rolling Wave, but I don't think that they can include music in the podcasts for copyright reasons. Any suggestions welcome.

Re: What if ?

In my opinion, flat pipes are great for solo piping, but for sessions, it's hard to beat the buzz from a nice bright wide-bore D. Keep the damn banjos in their place. :D

IUPD in Montreal

Some pipers will be getting together next Saturday in the St-Houblon pub in Montreal to celebrate IUPD. Details still being worked on but PM me if interested and I'll share info as soon as it gets confirmed. The plan is just to have a session, and cry on eachother's shoulder about how hard the Canad...

Re: Who is "Rusovius", who once refurbished Thomas Scott pipes ?

Very interesting. I don't know who "Rusovius" is, but your suggestion that it is a latinized version Rousome/Rowsome is not unreasonable.

Regarding the set, what pitch is it? Sounds approx C#. Could you post some photos of it?

There are international treaties that govern the playing of such instruments. Essentially, they are only allowed in coastal areas, close to shipping lanes, and in conditions of poor visibility.

Re: "Typical" Way of Playing?

There's something about the Ballycastle photo which bothers me. I'm no expert on photos, but there's something about the resolution of image, the sharpness, as well as the many tones of grey, which make me think that it was not taken in the '30s or '40s. Most of the photos I've seen from that era ar...

Re: Active Uilleann Pipe Makers

Are you looking exclusively at new sets, or would you consider a used set? There are a number of sets on uilleannobsession.com and on the FB Pipes for Sale page.

Re: Is it possible?

I was always under the impression that using the bellows to provide the air pressure was bad for the reed - the pressure changes are more severe. I was told that the bag should never be over pressurized, and using the bellows to push the reed into the high upper octave was a bad habit, to be avoided.

Re: Is it possible?

I understand that he’s talking about using the bellows to keep the air pressure up. I can’t understand how he could play the chanter with the arm clear of the bag.

Re: Spruce Reeds

Do you use a planer or sander to get the slip to the correct thickness before gouging? How do you shape the outside to get the curve you get naturally with cane? I guess what I'd like to see is in-progress pictures of preparing the slips. Firstly, the spruce I have is in small boards about 150mm x ...
