Re: FS: Noy Unkeyed Boxwood Flute on Ebay

I have had two Noys. One was keyless and one 5-keyed and both were beautiful players with plenty of volume. I've played Boehm flute for many years so really liked the larger embouchure hole and purer tone of those flutes. Don't know if I really needed the larger hole, though. Boehm flute should be p...

Re: Buying a whistle in Cleveland Ohio, an effort in futilit

Flute Specialists in Clawson, Michigan (just outside of Detroit) had some nice whistles in the past (i.e. Burke, Water Weasel). It's been several years and I no longer live in the area but they can probably tell you what they have in stock if you give them a call.

Re: For me, flute and whistle don't mix

I agree with Radcliff. Keep your embouchure relaxed when playing the whistle. Because the tip is small, there can be a tendency to tense the muscles around it.

Re: Silver whistle characteristics

I have found that some Tully whistles play with more chiff than others. The tone of the one I own now is not as pure as one I sold several years ago but some prefer that.

Re: Taking whistles abroad on planes in the luggage hold

FWIW, a former flute instructor had a rather valuable instrument destroyed in an automobile accident. The flute was in the trunk. After that, he always recommended keeping anything like that right next to you when travelling so whatever fate would bring, it would happen to both of you.

Re: Harp question

Redwolf,

I asked both my classical and Celtic harp teachers about "coupled hands" awhile ago and neither of them knew what I was talking about. When you say "wire" do you mean double-strung? Both of my bigger harps have wire in addition to gut and nylon strings.

Re: Harp question

What Redwolf said. I would recommend something that extends to at least C below middle-C to minimize the chances of your left hand encroaching on what the right hand is doing. My first harp is a 22-string kit-harp that only goes to G below and I really miss the extra 4 strings. If we'd known anythin...

Re: Overcoming Performance Shakes

Getting together with another person who is at the same approximate level you are will really help. I do this before harp recitals. I am in my third year of lessons and have a friend who plays stuff similar to what I do. We both normally practice alone and get nervous just playing for each other. Se...

Re: Wish me luck!

Not sure if there really is an equivalent in the U.S. for wind players. I recall piano playing friends in high school preparing for guilds & even dancers preparing for their exams but there wasn't any such thing for flute players. We participated in solo/ensemble & regional & state band ...

Re: What guitar to buy? Please read for more info I need help..

My daughter and I went to Guitar Center last year to try out guitars because she wanted a step up from the Alvarez she had as a beginner. After selling some other instruments and being given a friend's $50 gift card that was about to expire, she had $350 to work with. She tried the Martins in that r...

Re: FS: Olwell Rosewood

For what it's worth, the unlined rosewood Olwell I had, which I believe was a Nicholson, was good for sessions. Plenty of volume and no problem w/tuning. I bought mine on Jordan's recommendation and hope to find another just like it now that things are better economically. I love rosewood. The recom...

Re: What do you play in addition to flute?

Harp, handbells, mountain dulcimer & hammered dulcimer and as of two months ago, alto sax. My daughter went back to school and took a third of the church horn section with her. As my son is part of the other two-thirds (tenor sax) and without a driver's license I had to take him to rehearsals so...

Re: Dull string on my brass-strung harp

Ceadach/Redwolf-

Slightly OT- Do either of you use phosphor bronze strings? I just did a complete restring of my hammered dulcimer using precut strings (couldn't afford to buy wire in bulk right now) and the pb strings seemed more prone to breakage than the others.
