Re: why no flute in Appalachian music?
It turns out there's quite a long thread (and quite mixed, in terms of quality of info) on this question over on the Fiddler's Hangout forum. A cassette of fiddle and fife duets by Bruce Greene and Bob Butler (FIddle and Fife: together again after a hundred years) gets mentioned there and in a brief...

Re: why no flute in Appalachian music?
I'd be interested to know if anyone has found any photos or other mentions of flutes or fifes in the southern old-time music of the 1920s and 1930s, the time of the Bristol Sessions and other recordings that came to define the genre. I've seen earlier references, but can't recall any from that era i...

Re: why no flute in Appalachian music?
There's a very enjoyable live recording of music and talking about music from Alan Jabbour and Stephen Wade, "Americana Concert" (it's on Spotify). Lots of the tunes are from Henry Reed, who Jabbour knew and whose tunes he recorded and transcribed (they're on the LIbrary of Congress websit...

Re: 19th NY flutemakers and Irish music
If I may add on another question, was a fair amount of what we now called old time music played on flutes? I have always thought it likely that it was. Wooden flute sounds fine in OT ensembles, for much the same reasons flute sounds fine in ITM. And flutes were widespread, or how were these makers ...

Thanks for the recommendation, Brad. I very much enjoyed the book. Lots of good stuff in there about Vermont and Robert Frost as well.

Re: Old Time Irish flute
Well, Jim, you brought it up. And I don't think it's inconsequential or somehow ill-mannered that some groups of players might be seeking a particular sound and be unhappy with a change of instrumentation that alters that. This is something we do for pleasure, after all, and part of that might be su...

Re: Old Time Irish flute
Jim posted interestingly on this subject some time ago, and it sent me off to try to find some additional info about flute in old time music. I'd like, but don't have a copy of this: http://www.psupress.org/books/titles/0-271-00299-9.html The field recordings by guy who wrote that book are on YouTu...

Re: What is 'good' tone?
You know you're producing good tone when you can feel, under your fingers, the air vibrating through the whole length of the tube, every note sounds equally rounded and full and you can do anything with it from 'ppp' to 'fff,' vibrato, trills, etc. Squeaks, stuffiness, airiness, harshness or flatne...

Re: CP SPECIAL OFFERS
I just ordered one of these specials from Ronaldo, and I wanted to give his post a friendly bump. No commercial interest on my part. I had one of his maple-headed low D whistles some years ago, and I'm delighted to have the chance to get another.
