Re: Looking for Martin Mulvihill Tune Book

The link above to the Martin Mulvihill tune book in ABC format is dead.
Are those ABCs out there anywhere?

Re: My long lost dad, the woodenflute player

Friend of mine, a tremendous guitar and wooden flute player, found his birth mother and two half-brothers a couple of years ago. They had never met, and he had no idea even that he had siblings. Turns out his half brother is also a guitar player, as well as builder of high-end guitars. Reckon its in...

Re: Are there any sessions in San Antonio, TX?

Tom,

Thanks for the tip. Had no idea.

Unfortunately, our band may be in the studio that weekend trying to get a few tracks put away. Scheduling pending. We'll see....

Re: Flutes in Space

"A pennywhistle ain't a flute." To be pedantic, here is a classification of the various types of flutes, with examples. Note that the pennywhistle is type of flageolet: Flutes (Flue Voiced) (Air column split by lip of of the instrument) ---Open Tube   ------End Blown Single Flutes --------...

Re: Flutes in Space

Here's the info to answer some of the above questions: Unless plans changed at the last minute, Cady will have three flutes with her: - One of Ian Anderson's silver Boehm system flutes (maybe not the one pictured, since the three flutes were packed away for the trip several weeks ago - don't know wh...

Re: Are there any sessions in San Antonio, TX?

I went to a session at a Pizza place in San Antonio last Memorial Day weekend. Mostly fiddles. One other flute player, who had driven in from some distance away. No pipes. No squeezies. One upright bass. Mostly Old Time music. A few Irish tunes played square, al la contradance; not much Irish music....

Re: How to improve a Pratten's Perfected

My preferred honker tune is The Coalminers Reel, but I've been wanting to put away Green Mountain - have bits of it now. We'll see what mood I'm in next week. :pint:

Re: How to improve a Pratten's Perfected

Have a nice tune! I'm planning to do some home recordings using the two head joints in sequence on the same tune to see if I can hear the difference in tone. What I'll hear on a recording will be different from what I experience playing. Be fun to see if I can hear the difference in the recordings. ...

Re: How to improve a Pratten's Perfected

Well I'll be... My Firth and Pond is a "Rudall" design rather than "Pratten," as you can see in my "avatar" picture, where that's the flute I'm playing. I haven't tried other head joints on the F&P, as it plays easily with the original. For the Boosey Pratten's, how...

Re: The Central Nervous System and You - 101

Two suggestions: 1. Before you start the tune, hear it in your head as you want it to come out. Not just the notes, but the rhythm, notes, volume phrasing, the whole ball of wax. Once you start, keep focusing on the tune, hearing it now while you're playing it. It's all about focus. Focus on the tun...

Re: Is the embouchure hole 90% of the flute?

Terry said, "It's my routine experience that a 19th century flute usually benefits dramatically from being fitted with a new head." Just before I read this thread, I posted a new thread about how much my Boosey Pratten's Perfected improved when I replaced the original head joint with my Ol...

Re: Cutting finger for E?

On a short or long E roll in either octave, I cut with T3. Much cleaner for me to involve both hands. But in the middle octave I often substitute a crann on e for the long long roll. Learned this years ago from John Skelton. On cuts coming up to the middle octave e as the highest note in a string, I...

How to improve a Pratten's Perfected

Let me share my new discovery! My Boosey Pratten's Perfected flute (#7676, 20 June 1865) sounds great, but is quite hard to drive. Even with all the pads replaced and sealing well, it takes a lot of pressure and air to fill. Very tiring to play. So I thought... maybe I should ask Patrick Olwell if h...
