Eldarion - (said -"Hrmm... what you're describing doesn't sound like playing out of time. You seem to be talking about swing/lilt?) Yes and no....I have heard out-of-time-ness but still on the 1 beat due to things such as triplets, staccato and legatto, played too fast and hence the timing bein...

The thing I like about Leo's regulator playing is his use of on and off the beat rythm , Uilliam Usually called 'Syncopation' Royce is right about playing in time and tune, and its a nonsense to suggest otherwise and shews a basic lack of understanding Irish Traditional Music.Even slow airs, where ye...

For me there are two pieces of piping that stand out as sheer mastery at its highest level. The first is Leo Rowsome playing the "Castles of Dromore".. ...snip... the second is Rowsome, again, playing "The Independence Hornpipe". ..... snip....Tommy Add to that his set "Jen...

Thanks James, I'm kind of wondering what it's all about myself. :D Anyway - back to the point of original discussion. I don't have any regulators myself, even after ten or so years of piping - too expensive. I may never even get to see the shores of Ireland  :D So all I can do is sit and listen...

Re: Leo Rowesome's Regulator Playing

there's much more to Leo Rowsome's reg playing than first meets the eyes (ears) DavidG Like how he used only one key on one reg most of the time and saved a lot of air that way? :D Really :-? I hadn't noticed on account of the CD I was listening to seemed to have him making quite full use of...

Leo Rowesome's Regulator Playing

Hi all, I've been listening to Leo Rowsome a lot lately and can't help but be increasingly enraptured by his regulator playing. At first it seemed so overpowering and monotonous, but after the 4th anf 5th time of listening to the CD I'm beginning to understand the complexity of what he is doing. I p...

I've just tried a new head on the same staple. Didn't gouge the staple bed so deeply and rounded the corners more - success!!!

Thanks for the help guys,

By the way....why are some reeds parallel and others 'boat' shaped? WHat's the advantage, if any, in having a boat shaped reed and how do you make them?

Thanks,
DG

Eric, You're spot on with regards using fingers to feel for evenness. I've been making reeds (on and off) since I started piping ten years ago and only now just acquired callipers. Until now I've just relied on my fingers to do the feeling. So actually, perhaps I should avoid becoming too reliant on...

Last, but definitely not least, is that the slip may not be even along its edges. That is, the sides may not be perfectly parallel to each other, and/or the thickness along the edge may vary. Eric Thanks for the tips Eric. The last point I don't think was my problem as I had carefully seen to it th...

Alan,

I'll go and have another crack at it. Thanks for the advice. (I should actually go and do some work on my dissertation, but hey....what's more important  ?

Cheers,

Could also be that you are making the 2nd gouge too deep? Alan Alan Hi Alan and thanks for the detailed reply complete with pics  My tails did look like the one you did, ie not too sharp or wide plus chamferred and all that. By 2nd gouge, do you mean when gouging the tails for the staple?...

reed blades separate after tying on

Hi all, I've just finished tying the unscraped head onto the staple and cannot stop the blades from separating along the length of the head. I use standard measurements according to the likes of Hegarty and also David Quinn's manual and I gouge the tail where the staple lies. I don't always have thi...

I have it here next to me - it has a pic of Eugene sitting on a rock playing his set with a chanter that appears to have a tenor drone sticking out the top of it. Lots of tunes.

Cheers,
