Re: Battle of the Tutorials: Larsen v. McCormack

One of the things I love about tutorials is learning the suggested tunes. It's probably one of the most fun parts of writing a tutorial as well-- just choosing tunes that are suited to learners at different stages. As Julia says, since we start and progress as individuals, there's not a "best&q...

Re: Perfection?

I own a $150 splitting axe. It is perfect. And times I can't get my flute to sound as beautiful as it looks, I never regret having that axe. I just head to the woodpile. Exactly the right heft, it sings on its arc, and is sure to amputate cleanly if I slip. If I want to feel like I'm good at *someth...

Re: R&R on ebay...Frankenflute or not?

Not that this subjective comment is worth all that much, but that flute looks typical mid-period style to me, not relatively early as a #1000 range would be. I'm not sure that the "claw" C/C# touches appeared before the #2000s...... My early Rudall has very different looking keys than thi...

Re: the ultimate key configuration

I went from keyless to keyed about a year and a half ago. I have eight keys and find that the ones I use most (I play mostly Irish traditional music) are the short and long F, the G#, the D#, and the low C#. The Bb doesn't get much play because of the keys I play in, the C nat gets cross fingered so...

Re: Flutes and the Cold Weather

I've been reading along and feeling really guilty about my flute until I read Cathy's post. I do play every day (or nearly so) and I don't leave my flute near the wood stove. And it's already had a major head joint crack, nicely repaired. I'm guessing that it's been through way more in its former ye...

Don't duel with your flutes! Dual flutes sound much nicer. :)

Re: What do you do when...

I play daily, whether I want to or not, unless someone else in the house has a migraine! My self-imposed minimum is "two tunes a day." When it's late and I'm tired, I just go for two tunes. But usually it stretches into two more, and then two more. I'm finding lately that I often play bett...

Re: nervousness while playing

I saw her Sunday night, Cat, and she didn't mention you... 'course, I forgot to ask. I was too nervous. Rob, Cathy, Casey, you've all given such great encouragement. I think that showing up at a session and having someone like you folks there, we'd all put our fears to rest. I am ever gratefu...

Re: Recently ordered my first Irish flute...

I'm not a silver flute player, but I can get a tune out of one. So it'll probably be the same for you switching from silver flute to Irish flute. I'm glad you went for the offset holes. I have a Forbes flute and have an issue with that last reach. You are going to have so much fun with this! Enjoy! ...

Another one I just added to the collection. I think this is from a recording of Peg Mc Grath and Josie Mc Dermott. I know it as Gilbert Clancy's. http://www.box.net/shared/fk719oe1xt As always, feedback appreciated. Arbo. Well played. I enjoyed that! :) Here's a slightly different take on the same ...

Re: help on tone?

When I started out, I'd inwardly scoff at the workshop descriptions which stated that those in the advanced category should have been playing for three to ten years at minimum. I'd say to myself, "I'm sure I don't really need three years to become an advanced player! Now it's been about three y...

Re: "mopping up" tricks needed!

Cathy Wilde described keeping the flute vertical tween tunes and bouncing it on her knee as helpful and I have adopted this method, which seems to work pretty well. I do this too. And since I started playing an older flute that I oil more frequently, I'm noticing that a couple of my pairs of pants ...

Re: How do I oil a keyed wooden flute?

Jennie, the key system on a simple system flute really is Poki Yoki at it's finest. Poki Yoki? Okay, if you say so. Is that harder or easier than Pokemon? Thanks for the vote of confidence, Jem and Henke. I'll consider trying it sometime. I'm just so awed to be playing such an old instrument I'm al...

Re: How do I oil a keyed wooden flute?

I am way too chicken to take my old flute keys off! Something to do sometime with an expert present, I think. Or am I just being pessimistic? I am way too far from anyone who could put it back right. Any of you seasoned flute care people who are coming this far north, let me know. I'll trade food, f...

Re: RIP Andrew Wyeth

When I was student teaching, I used to bicycle past his house on my way to Chadds Ford. His landscapes were my "home" places, so I really loved his work. It was also very appealing to my romantic leanings as a young person. I hadn't thought of him in years, but hearing this news brought me...
