New Busman Whistle

Thanks to conversation on this list, I bought a new Busman whistle to accompany my Schultz' and O'Riordans, etc... Paul said, "How about this nice school bus yellow one?" and I said, "yeah, why not.?" I don't have a colored whistle--just those dull wood ones, and brass, and silve...

[quote="Lawrence"]I've never played one, but Ronaldo Reyburn will make a Low D with an optional hole pattern that's supposed to be easier for people with small hands. http://reyburnlowwhistles.com/hole.html I, with small han ds, love the Reyburn low d....it's got a huge sound and makes a g...

vibrato

I use mostly diaphram vibrato. It's a 'flutey' kind of sound, but the important thing is to keep your throat OPEN, and try to keep the vibrato out of your throat. If you start closing your throat, you really tighten up the tone, I think, and find yourself getting sharp and shrill. My personal prefer...

Stuck whistle!

I have a lovely Harper D whistle that is no longer tunable: the head joint and body are stuck! There's no discernable injury to the whistle: it was safely in the cabinet drawer, but when I pulled it out recently--it was immoveable. These whistles are an aluminium alloy. I've tried hot water on the h...

Glenn

Glenn was my friend, although I never met him in person. We spend many nights chatting late on AOL during a particularly stressful period in his life, and he sent me tapes and poems to continue our conversations. We had many mutual friends--so the fact that we never met face-to-face did not seem to ...

Metronomes as useful tools.

Metronomes are a great way to learn a tune...especially one that is giving you a technical challenge. I like to start the tune slow, play through it until I get it right, and then keep moving it up a couple of clicks. Best to go beyond the speed you are ultimately going to play it, just to make sure...

Small handed person with low D whistle

...uses a Reyburn. Not only is it the easiest reach, but the tone is
rich and wonderful. And it would make one heck of a weapon when you have to shove your way through crowds of adoring fans....

Breton Music

John Skelton is a superb Breton player on flute and pipes. One of the quintessential folk artists is Daniel Thonon, who plays accordion, flutes, cornemuse, harpsichord, bagpipes, etc. I think his recordings are available in many places, maybe even Amazon or Virgin Records. You also might try Amazon....

Swab Solution for Slobber and Spit

Just wanted to let you all know that I found a great swab for my whistles...it's a piccolo flag, made by Roger Holman. Comes in a variety of colors, if you care. But the great thing is, it really works! I tried it yesterday in a four hour whistle blast following the annual Hibernian parade, so the f...

I too have the offset hole pattern, and I use my little fingers to reach the third hole. It's quite comfortable, really, and I'm doing very well with the fingering. And the sound is awesome!
