Not so fast! Delrin is NOT impervious to heat!!! According to Dave Copley delrin starts to soften at about 180 degrees F (82C) and shouldn't be left in a car on a hot sunny day.

Re: The Great and Awesome Flute Youtube Thread

Sporadically posting videos online these days because people need the music and I'm on lockdown so don't have much else to do! Did a flute one today and thought I'd share it here.

Re: Whistles needed for live gigs - San Diego area

Hi Richard, thanks for the offer! Already one is cancelled and likely the other will be shortly. So it looks like playing at home on the big day! The city might just shut everything down anyway, that's what's going on up here in LA, the mayor made all bars and restaurants shut their doors. I think ...

Agreed, I like to say that intonation is in the ear of the beholder!

Re: Flute tuning

So for the key of D that would be a drone of D and A Yes! For the key of G it would be G and D, E would be E and B, A would be A and E etc. Major or minor doesn't matter the 1 and the 5 are the same in either. Personally I don't always like a 5th when using drones, sometimes it can clash too much, ...

Re: Flute tuning

Kevin Crawford recommends always practicing against a 1-5 Drone in the key you are playing in. Thus your ear is always training with a reference. I think this is one of the best things you can do to train your ear. Playing in tune with others requires constant listening and it takes time for this t...

Re: help with types of whistles...

Big ISB fan myself and have listened to that album many many times. I would bet money that it's a bamboo whistle he uses, those recordings sound nothing like a Generation. Plus, a bamboo whistle just seems more like Robin's style in that era.

More than likely the books of poetry are him. Never had the privilege of seeing him preform but I've been a fan of his music for a decade or so. Those of you who know who he is know whimsy is definitely on brand for him. I would take what he says more as myth rather than fact as that is, presumably,...

Re: Portland, OR. Students Sought, Flute/Whistle/Bouzouki/DA

Just wanted to update this post. I no longer live in Portland and am now based in Los Angeles (downtown-ish); maybe one of the mods could edit the title to reflect this?

Everything else remains the same!

better audio as well. Unless you have access to 24 bit studio master quality lossless audio files this is totally false; if you have access to 16 bit lossless files then you get the same quality as a CD (bandcamp is the only digital music retailer that offers download of lossless formats like FLAC,...

Casey makes a great Bb at a good price and will customize the finger spacing to suit your hands. I have one in boxwood and I have super happy with it; here is me playing it.

Re: Eight-keys?

I use them all the time! My J. Gallagher has really solid low C and C# and I would not want to live without them at this point (had this flute for over 7 years). So many possibilities with these keys; playing other genres, new ornaments, not having to fold these notes, making other flute players jea...

Re: CITES Question

Just put it in your checked luggage (if it's in your carry-on, you don't need some over-zealous, bored security guard thinking it might be a pipe bomb  ). Absolutely DO NOT check your wooden flute!!!!! Changes in humidity and temperature can cause wood to crack (the neck on my Fylde bouzouki...

Re: C natural key sticking

I would second the recommendation to contact the Olwells before doing anything else. That being said I had this same problem with my Gallagher flute and John told me (in person, he was in Portland and I asked him)to take a nail file and, making sure it was flush with the block, sand the inside of th...
