It's a way to get a clear in tune flatted seventh in both octaves.
Hating it or loving it, covering it or using it are all valid options.
It just isn't traditional. That doesn't invalidate it.
Well I don't think it does...

Re: Tune book suggestions
Joe,
I have O'Neill's Music of Ireland over 1000 Fiddle Tunes.
Just the music notation, no ABC or chords so you have to read music.
I would part with it if you or anyone else were interested.

Re: CP: July update
I did a bit of searching for gidgee.... On the internet or in the back yard? :D Best wishes. Steve Internet. My yard woods would be: Aspen that sprung from neighbor's roots, Maple that grew from neighbor's whirly seed, Mulberry from seed carried in by wind or bird, Crabapple that wasn't supposed to...

I did a bit of searching for gidgee. This is a gidgee log. Maybe not like Mitch's but I'll bet there is a whistle in it!

Re: CP Reyburn Whistles
Ronaldo, I acquired a Reyburn whistle on loan way back when we were beginners. I was invited to set up my table at a local historical museum unaware that fourth graders from schools around the valley would be visiting. None of mine could be heard but yours which fortunately I had along rose above th...

Mitch,
Or Stick, Which ever of you who saw those two whistle in a log and took away all that wood to get to them I commend. That is dedication!
I am a bit concerned about the economics but I do admire the dedication...
It sure would be a treat to see the before and after photos.

Re: WTB: Give me your tired, your old, your unplayable whist
My first conical whistle was of sheet copper rolled around the tapered end of a ski pole which seemed to have the right conical dimensions. It was "playable" but not pretty. Then I thought why not use the ski pole as the whistle? That was playable and pretty (after a lot of sanding and pol...

Re: WTB: Give me your tired, your old, your unplayable whist
Hi Nick, Mr G is correct Gens are seamless cylinders not conical. And if you just want a template to form a playable whistle wrap a piece of paper around a playable whistle and pencil rub the holes. Allow for a seam then lay that out on a fresh sheet of tin and roll your own. Making a tapered wooden...

CP for July and on
The broken wing is back to useable and I am making a few whistles. The website hasn't had any changes for a couple of years and everything there is still available and prices are still the same. I am maturing (81 now) and think I have whistle making to a pretty decent state and of an adequate value....

Re: Has anyone made a ridiculously large bore whistle for fu
"What were those results, Mack?" Nice sound for the bottom few notes and then each note got more and more out of tune-- flatter and flatter if I remember right. When I started making whistles there were no real instructions available. Anything hollow or what I could make hollow was fair ga...

Has anyone made a ridiculously large bore whistle for fun?
The simple answer is yes. I did. More out of ignorance than fun.
The practical answer:
the fun went away because of the results.
For what it's worth an ocarina and a melody flute/whistle (closed end) sorta provide an answer.

Re: Why Not Stainless Steel?
Hi Ruben,
One of the whistles mentioned on my fund raiser site is stainless steel. It's the high D whistle section of a stainless steel ski pole walking stick.

Re: Heated whistle posts?
One thing I never do is join in heated whistle discussions! But one of my most useless (but working) projects was a whistle stand to warm several at a time. Air warmed by a curling inside a tube with tubing risers which acted as little chimneys onto which the whistles were place. It worked but didn'...
