You're too kind. Sorry we didn't get to chat.

NTIF was great! Fantastic weather, food and fun. Musical highlight for me: "bohola" - wow! What a joy to hear them live.

Re: North Texas Irish Festival, March 3-5 in Dallas

Could you give us a clue on where to find you to save a little walking around. Sorry, that would have been nice, eh? Here you go: Saturday, 9pm - Trinity Stage (at the center of the Centennial building) Sunday, 5pm - Star & Harp Pub Stage (center of the Automobile building) Site map and full sc...

For the past couple of years the only place with a decent selection of whistles has been Hobgoblin Music. There is another vendor called "The Flute Cart" - no idea what that will be.

North Texas Irish Festival, March 3-5 in Dallas

Any of you coming to the North Texas Irish Festival this weekend? It is the 2nd largest Irish festival in the USA.

Headliners this year include Eileen Ivers and the Makem Brothers.

My band will be playing at 9:00pm Saturday and again at 5:00pm on Sunday. Stop by and say hi if you can!

High quality slide whistle?

(No, not for playing Irish slides) :) I'm looking for a slide whistle (the ones that make cartoon sound effects). But it needs to have a wide range and a pretty sound, as it will be used to play a melody. I found a couple on the web ( here and here ), but the sound clips indicate the high register i...

Love that tune - I did a little homemade recording of Ashokan right after I got my Chieftain A: Ashokan Farewell

We often play it at our sessions down here too, along with the tunes mentioned above. My band also plays a traditional version Radio Sweethearts that works very well on A whistle.

I've said it before and I'll say it again... As long as there is no international regulatory body tightly governing the composition of the world's traditional music, people are just going to continue to break the rules. They're going to keep writing non-swingy, reel-sounding hornpipes and doing what...

Semantics are so tricky.

There are two parts of a time signature: how many notes in a beat, and how many beats in a bar. Yes, jigs use triplets (3 notes per beat), but it is a duple meter, meaning two beats to the bar.

Waltzes, slipjigs and mazurkas are triple meter - three beats to the bar.

Re: Mazurkas

Mazurkas are to polkas what Slip jigs are to jigs. Don't you mean "mazurkas are to waltzes what slip jigs are to jigs"? The rhythm of a polka is duple meter...a mazurka is triple. RamblDoc's analogy is accurate in that says "this triple is to this duple as that triple is to that dupl...

Re: The Stupidest of All Stupid Questions?

What browser do you use? If you use firefox, there's almost certainly a setting to disable automatic background music. With Internet Explorer, probably not so much... In IE you can press the Stop button on the toolbar (document icon with red X) and background music will stop... until the next time ...
