Re: African blackwood surface finish deterioration
I have a Sam Murray boxwood that I purchased probably third or fourth hand from its making. It was quite sticky and smelled of linseed oil. Seems like some prior owner tried to re-oil with linseed and didn't, or couldn't, wipe enough off. The flute played beautifully (other that fingers slightly sti...

Re: Beginner flute upgrade: Galeon or Copley?
My two cents... Either of the flutes you mention is a step up from the Dixon. Copley makes very nice flutes at a good price (especially for the no rings/no slide model). I've had a couple of his flutes and have kept a keyed version and an F to keep on the desk for that moment of inspiration. I also ...

Re: Tara (Bingham) Diamond recordings
There's some on An Gaoth Aduaidh/The North Wind To find a copy, that's another story. Turns out that I do have a copy of that CD (thanks Kenny). She's listed as Tara Bingham so my inventory search missed her. One cut with two jig — nicely played though. My hope was to find other commercially availa...

Tara (Bingham) Diamond recordings
I have the "Seanechairde - Old Friends" recording of Tara and Dermy Diamond with Daithi Sproule. Has Tara Diamond made any other recordings? I'd really be interested in any solo flute recordings. Would appreciate titles and maybe even places to acquire them. And, yeah Kevin, I have the Woo...

For anyone who might be interested, the Pipers Gathering in Litchfield, CT 11-14 August, will have a flute track (classes, workshops, performances). The Instructor/Performer will be Leslie Anne Harrison . One of her particular interests is working with classical fluters to introduce them to Irish tr...

Re: Degrees of taper
Can anyone with a Copeland provide info on which category those would fit? And is the taper similar over various keys?

Alternate keys
Just out of idle curiosity, if you were to get a flute in other than D (perhaps F, Eb, low C, etc.), what would it be and why?

Re: 7 hole whistles question
One of the joys of whistles is that they are inexpensive. So, if'n you want to play in Eb major, you just buy a whistle in that key and fudge those few accidentals.

Re: Wood Case Source?
McNeela makes a very solid plastic case for flutes with spaces for whistles also. The longer of the two spaces is 15 1/4" (and perhaps could be trimmed to a bit larger). I believe it's what Martin Doyle is currently using (at least what he was using a couple of years back). See https://mcneelam...

Offering for sale a keyless flute in D by Francois Baubet. Body is boxwood with a mopane end cap. Flute was made in 2017 and I've been the sole owner. Re: Teaching whistle instead of recorder-public school?
Thank you for your ideas- you all bring up good points and some things I hadn’t thought of before. Mr. Gumby, thank you for the curriculum link! There are many commonalities in US snd Irish curricula. I’m a public school music teacher of 31 years and trad player for about 12 and would like to find ...
