Re: Most Forgiving Low D?
Hi Lynn, I'm like you-I drift in and out of my hobbies, in and out of consciousness (just getting old), but still manage to check in here once in a blue, like today. I saw you wanted a forgiving Low D, easy to play, and it brought to my mind one I have that I wish was around early on when I was look...

Re: Covid drives flute player to new mandolin
A little late to the jam, but thanks a lot for the recommendation of Marla Fibish, PB+J! I am now listening to her on Youtube, and her album The Bright Hollow Fog here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ra67FyHi_ac&list=OLAK5uy_kVIhG9dja_alYUl6EyKZgLizlV8RnLgsQ Really nice stuff! I hope your Weyma...

Re: Seriously want
I came across this youtube video a while ago of a 1931 12 fret Martin 000-18 being played by Martin Simpson. It made me go stomping around the guitar stores for a while back then. Of course, I never did fine one that closely matched that vintage sound, but it was fun looking and playing guitars more...

Re: Clearest-sounding whistle?
I don't think you're going to know until you try a number of whistles in your particular acoustic situation. No doubt, as Richard said, this is the #1 solution to your problem, given our individual perceptions of sound and what we are able to hear in a noisy environment, depending on our ears, etc....

Re: Do whistles wear out?
A fellow player mentioned to me the other day that they find whistles wear out after a few years and don't sound as sharp. Has anyone experienced that? What I've experienced is that I've worn out and am not anywhere near as sharp as when I bought my first whistles in the 1970s. Can't say that the w...

Josie McDermott TG4 program
Mr.Gumby posted this on the flute forum; http://forums.chiffandfipple.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=105505 But I didn't see it posted here, and if you don't frequent the flute forum, you would definitely be missing out on a great program if you don't see it! It's not all about fluting or whistle, but ...

Re: Handed down : Josie McDermott
Wow, that was great, thank you very much Peter, for posting this! Josie is one of my favorite fluters, and now I'm a fan of his singing too. You wonder how he can keep all those tunes and finesse in his head still, or anyone for that matter. I'm baffled, as my brain seems to empty every night when I...

Re: Germs?
Right, dyersituations, me too-and all the whistles I've sold have been washed out and dried before shipping out, and so far no complaints from my many buyers over the years of any negative effects from purchase. So really, if the buyer and seller follow normal washing procedures, you are very unlike...

Re: Germs?
Perhaps a silly question...what do you do, if anything, to prevent swapping germs when using a tin whistle that was previously owned by someone else? I was surprised/intrigued to read on another post that there is actually an active market for second hand tin whistles. I have pondered the exact sam...

Re: Recommendation please: non-plastic low d whistle
I am not shopping based on price Lucky man  For what my opinion is worth (and I am no expert) it seems to me that there are two things that you might need to learn. In the short term you should probably learn the 'Super-EZ-grip' (sometimes known as 'pipers grip'). For that any reasonable whis...

Re: How to strengthen Low D
Thanks guys. I am working on long tones in the low register every day and it is helping a lot with my tone in general including hardening the D. Thanks for all the (mainly) positive comments. My flute is a G Somers Pratten and I don't believe in can't! Good, with that attitude, you will no doubt ge...

Re: Optima Low D in the studio
Oh wow! What a great video, and the music gave my day a good boost too! I want to hear more of this group now, so thank you Wiz for posting this-or I might have missed it! No wonder I liked it-Jutland! Definitely different from Paddy Keenan's version, but still a great listen-and in this case-a fun ...

Re: Low whistle in Swedish traditional music
Yes, quite a nice song-and thanks also for sharing it with us, Nathnainiel. Something you don't hear everyday around here either-Swedish folk music, very nice! Great singing-solo and chorus, and three of my favorite instruments-viola, cello and low whistle! I imagine the cellist might know of Barry ...

Re: How to strengthen Low D
Not all flutes have the capacity for a strong D, depite all your best efforts. Well, to be perfectly honest, not all players have the embouchure capacity for a strong (Low D), despite all their efforts. With a well known maker, the problem usually lies with the player, and not the flute, unless the...
