Re: Old flat set in South Dublin auction

m4malious wrote: Sun Feb 12, 2023 6:08 pm And, what was that chanter length, for interests sake?
5 apples? or 5 and 1/2?

M
Good guess: assuming a standard “125” size apple at 2.75”, the chanter is 5.90 apples long; baritone regulator is 5.55 apples long.

And just for the record, no it definitely wasn’t me who bought them

Re: Old flat set in South Dublin auction

Chanter stamp reads KENNA INVENTOR DUBLIN. If anyone else managed to read that, it may account for some of the fuss. Regs may well be Kenna also… but not in the same pitch, and so IMO this is at least two sets married together. Chanter throat is disconcertingly big even for Kenna (which can run a bi...

Re: Chinese cane

Feng is significantly harder cane than the K.Ge. The stuff NPU is selling is from K.Ge, and for our purposes I recommend it over the Feng product. Both are Arundo donax, sold as bassoon tubes. The two companies harvest from different regions of China. The material I have tested (from several batches...

Re: Bellows, Bellows, Bellows

It’s really hard to beat Kelleher bellows. They’re airtight, sturdy and hard-wearing without being too heavy, and they look great. Their customer service is also superb. I supply them to virtually all my customers now. The small size is big enough for most people, even for full sets. But if you pref...

Re: Where has the uilleannforum gone?

Hi Jeff, I’d love to see the site (the discussion bits, at least) restored and made read-only. That would address at least some of the bot and hacking issues. It’s a shame to lose that information and archival conversation, some of which isn’t duplicated elsewhere. No offence intended to the Chiffer...

Staple rolling video

For those interested, I’ve recently posted a YouTube video on staple rolling: https://youtu.be/xH5Nbq_6qBg I also see that Derrick Gleeson will be doing an online staple rolling workshop as part of NPU‘s upcoming https://pipers.ie/feile-phiobaireachta-2020-festival-of-uilleann-piping-in-august/ I’m ...

Re: Kelleher bellows info

I provide Kelleher bellows to all of my customers now. Unless they want to pay double for a stitched one... and even then I encourage them to go with the small Kelleher model. Kelleher offers two models - the usual offering on the web site is the “full sized” model which is plenty big, a bit oversiz...

Re: Micing Pipes for Recording

Over the years I’ve read many posts on this topic. The best advice I have to give is to avoid multiple chanter mics. These will inevitably result in phase cancellation effects which alter the tone and make the sound sensitive to minute position changes. The best advice I’ve encountered about microph...

Re: Bill Haneman contact?

I'm still here, but am horrendously behind on my email...

At the moment I am not taking new orders except by special arrangement, (i.e. come and have a chat), while I finish off the current order list (about two years' worth). Orders are pickup-only, for practical reasons.

Well, that doesn't sound at all like a tenor reg. Regs with the tonic normally would be classed as baritone regs.

Re: Imitation ivory

The "nice grain" swayne stuff appears to be the cellulose acetate material made in Italy. It's nice stuff, much different to work than the GPS polyester. Only available every few years, in fairly large orders. There's an order on now, PM me for details. Max thickness this time is 16 mm I'm...

Re: f on the tenor flat

sackcloth and ashes! I'm such a silly fool. It seems that I (myself!) had filled some wax at the top edge of the hole to flatten the f down to test Just Intonation. It was very very flat. Flatter than Just Intonation, nearly f nat. I might have forgot it and found it today with the intention to tes...
