John, Instruments were made from naturally occurring materials because nothing else was available. True, many of todays synthetic instruments can't match the sound and quality of their natural counterparts, but I believe this will change over time. Just the way new generations of synthetics have tak...

A truly awesome website as a result of your hard work. Now that the word's out, do you have the bandwidth to support all those files?

Cane reeds are around 1" outside diameter and sanded on a drum between 1 3/4" to 2" diameter... so my thoughts on plastic reeds would be a similar diameter. Typical yougurt containers are somewhat funnel shaped being a larger diameter at the top. I was going to try a container used fo...

Sounds like you're in the UK or Europe somewhere. What key are you interested in and how long do you expect to wait for a flat pitched full set? Bagpipeworks http://www.bagpipeworks.com/ has a half set in B on special. Fitting regulators to it would cut down on your wait. Brad Angus had a full set i...

Brian, You can't fault a pipemaker who only makes practice and half sets... seeing that it's probably the bulk of their business. As long as you know this up front. Besides, you've got years to progress. When you feel the need to get a full set, Sloan may be making full sets by then. I would expect ...

Brian, I've already posted Rogge's site. With so much great Uilleann information on the internet it's hard to remember it all, but here it is again, enjoy !! He's got some very professionally produced pictures of beautiful crafted sets. http://www.uilleann-pipes.de/ I usually recommend Patrick D'Arc...

Tansy, I did some research about materials used in bassoons and oboes. To my suprise, many bassoons are made from Maple. I confirmed this with a bassoon repairman. It may have to do with the weight of the wood versus strength. Many guitar necks are made from Maple as it's strong and resists warping....

Yes, to all of the above. Stronger bottom D, much louder, brighter tone and less likely to have tuning and weather related problems. Just like new shoes, they get more comfortable when 'played in' as each reed has it's own personality and tunes and reacts slightly different than the next one. As I m...

John, Don't despair, reed problems are a part of Uilleann pipes by their very nature. You're asking this instrument to make some of the most awesome sounds known to mankind, so you have to coax them a bit to get something in return. If it were easy, everyone would play one. Assuming you have nothing...

Dionys, The 'yougurt' reed websites I've seen relied on the natural curve of the container. You have to cut the pieces in the correct spot to make them work. Pipemaker Bob May has a different approach to making plastic reeds. He's been very successful with prototypes of heat formed plastic reeds and...
