Re: What to do about loose ring?
Maurice, thanks for the expert tips and advice. For now, it seems to be holding, but I'm keeping a copy of your advice should I need it in the future. Many thanks, Jeanie

Re: What to do about loose ring?
Maybe the box is cracked.....I've had it for some years. Might be best to buy a new one and see if that helps. Having had the Oasis humidifier directly in the Murray case for about a week, the ring isn't falling off today. It seems fairly secure now. I'm going to keep checking it. I got some glue to...

Re: Comparing the Qualities of Olwell and J. Gallagher Flutes?
Interesting topic. Hmmmm. I have a 6-key J. Gallagher Rudall flute, which is my main flute. I also have an Olwell boxwood Rudall (keyless/all wood-purchased it some years ago from JessieK). It is so hard to compare them--adjectives don't do them justice. The Olwell boxwood sounds like butter--full, ...

I ordered mine about a week ago, so now I'm REALLY ready for it to arrive. Thanks so much, Cathy, for your analysis.

Re: What to do about loose ring?
Thanks, Cathy and Jon. Hope it works! This low humidity is driving me crazy! Even in my tupperware box with several humidity devices, it's still registering around 40% in the box.

Re: What to do about loose ring?
Thanks, Jon. Do you just cut the t-shirt material into tiny strips. Do I leave it in place if I glue?
Thanks again.
Thanks again.

What to do about loose ring?
I'm trying to play in my flutes because I'd neglected them of late due to life and other musical activities, but I've been feeling the bug to play more--really missed it. (Been doing too much Boehm flute and ukulele, of all things....) Anyway, my boxwood Murray has a loose ring. I've played it a few...

Ruminating on my Byrne and Gallagher flutes
Hmmmm. I've decided that of all the flutes I've tried, I simply love the focused, sweet, clear, clarion (there's a few adjectives) tone of my medium-holed Byrne keyless and my Gallagher 6-key Rudall flutes. The Byrne took me quite some time to get the the true "sweet spot" to sound in tune...

Re: Flute for Occasional Trips Off the Farm?
Simon Polak makes some wonderful traversi, at a reasonable price. I know that his instruments are often played by contestants at the biannual National Flute Asssociation traverso competition. His web page gives descriptions of all the models. Most are available in either 415, 440, or even lower than...

Anyone attending Chris Norman's Mini-Boxwood in Indy?
Just wondering if any other Chiffers are attending Chris Norman's Mini-Boxwood in Indianapolis next Wednesday & Thursday? It's put on through the Indianapolis Early Music festival....

Re: Italian Baroque Flutes
At first, I was thinking of Simon Polak's Tassi flute, but apparently that was made by someone in France. Of course, the name seems to be Italian. Mr. Polak discusses that flute (and links to Jed Wentz's comments on it) on his website under "flutes": www.earlyflute.com (I think that's it) ...

Re: Sam Murray flute on eBay
A little over a year ago, I bought a new boxwood Murray from Sam. It was extremely out of tune when I received it--particularly flat on the low D and F#. I kept working with it, thinking it was me. After a month or two, I had some other people play it, one of whom plays a Murray, and they agreed it ...

Re: A Keyed-Flute With a Comfortable Reach for Smaller Hands?
My John Gallagher Rudall flute has smaller tone holes, and six keys. The reach is very easy. In fact, he angled the tone holes to make them even more closely spaced. I think my hands have about a 7-inch spread. It gets a very full tone into the third octave. I believe it's modeled after an 1820s or ...
