Re: Half-holing C-nat

I'm not really a whistler yet, except for having tested my daughters whistle before sending it to her for christmas last year (I'll be getting my own in a few weeks), but I have been playing keyless flute for almost a year. When I started flute, I was naturally trying to brace it with my right pinki...

Re: Who makes a good plastic High D flute/fife these days?

I bought a tony Dixon DX026 "duo" for my daugher for christmas. I was trying it out for a while before I gave it to her. The "piccolo mode" had a decent tone but took a LOT of air, especially to hit the seond onctave. It is molded rather than machined and I had to use a nail file...

Re: Writing a tune on the fly.

Non-piper here, but just wanna say... Is there something special about the instrument that would prevent it? People improvise new songs all the time on every instrument under the sun. -edit... sorry to say that like a butthead, I'd be thrilled to hear anyone writing a new song live, it's not an easy...

Re: Boehm key mechanism in wood, is that art or madness?

Well there's video of him playing it, so apparently it works. I wouldn't want to play it though, I'd be afraid of getting splinters.

Re: Hunt for alternatives to trad.

Hymns and christmas carols sound beautiful on my keyless flute. I've also been practicing Greensleeves and Over the Rainbow.

Re: Irish Flutes by William Miller

I'm also trying to get ahold of Billy Miller. My mom bought me one of his D flutes a couple years ago, and I have checked out his website but it seems very out of date, possibly abandoned, the same goes for his facebook page. I tried contacting him via email and FB, both have gotten no response. Apa...

Re: whistles for young children

I would tend to agree, on both points. A colored whistle may appeal to some children, but others might like one that has a shine to it, and others still may like one in PVC. I would show her a few and see what she likes. As for the elder daughter, how about a microphone? My 24 year old daughter bou...

Re: whistles for young children

Yeah, I think I'm leaning towards the Dixon Sopranno whistle/flute combo (high D), she tried to hold her recorder like my flute at one point, I'll give her the option if she wants to switch. It's going to be a christmas presant, I'm planning on getting all my kids instruments. My younger son is a na...

whistles for young children

I'll start by telling a cute story... My 7 year old daughter called me on video chat today after her schoolwork was done. We talked for a little bit and I played her a song on my guitar. When I was done playing, she jumped up and ran away. I asked her mother where she went, she didn't know. Then my ...

Yes! Thank you, that explains it all, now it makes sense. I played classical Boehms flute as a child and I don't remember anything like that, but that was over 20 years ago and it's probobly different between simple system and boehms.

Long notes?

I've been making music my whole life, I can read sheet music (or used to, I mostly play by ear now and I'm trying to regain the skill), I know most of the fancy musical terms, etc... Recently as I've been learning to play keyless flute, I've been reading about people sometimes mentioning a "Lon...

that's what I figured, but sometimes I get lucky. Not this time. I was hoping I'd be able to try before I buy, music shops in my area have absolutely nothing in the way of keyless flutes.

Roosebeck/Walmart flute

I was cruising the internet tonight and came across a few ads for Roosebeck flutes, with a few different models available. They claim to be ebony or satinwood. I tried to search for a makers website, and only found ads. They range in price form ~$150-$250. one of the websites I found them on was Wal...
