How did you learn to play the whistle?

Curious to know how did you learn to play the tin whistle, or how you made any progress further on. Did you watch YouTube videos, got a tutor book, had a personal teacher or a course? What is one thing you were (or still are) struggling with the most as a tin whistle player? P.S. Based on my experie...

Re: Young Beginner Whistle

I would recommend Dixon Trad D or Waltons Mellow D when it comes to the sound. Maybe Feadog is a good choice too, for someone who needs a whistle with very low air requirements. There are also colored models if you think the kids would find a colored whistle more appealing. Check this whistle buying...

Re: whistles for young children

Not sure where you got that idea, especially the F is a little racehorse. The high pitched G is probably an acquired taste but for small fingers there's no problem playing them. In my opinion, it's not much of a difference with D when it comes to fingering. I was more aiming at breathing requiremen...

Re: whistles for young children

If I were you, I would probably go with a regular D whistle. Generation does offer F and G keys, but they are not so easy to play at all. Take a look at this article, there is a section about whistles for children. Most well-known brands offer their line of colored models that are great for kids!

Re: Ornamentation

Thank you everyone for all of the great discussion! I find that alot of jigs and reels seem excessive in their ornamentation and it seems like they want to be really showy rather than following a natural rhythm. I always imagine that, as jigs and reels are dances, if the speed and ornamentation mak...

Re: Wide-body D for beginner?

Waltons Mellow D is a great wide-bore whistle, I think the only one among beginner (inexpensive) options. If you are aiming for loudness, you can go with a Susato (also wide-bore but it's a bit more expensive). There's a good tin whistle buying guide you may want to check for some more options too.

Basically, it's a triplet, plus the cut being added to one of the notes at the same time.

WTB: Tony Dixon Trad Brass (C/D)

As I'm not able to find this model anywhere online, please let me know if somebody is willing to sell it. Looking for a whistle in good condition only, and would be glad to buy both C and D if possible. Also, I'm not interested in Trad Nickel model.

Re: suggestions for a B flat whistle with least air requirem

Generation Bb definietlly doesn't require a lot of air. So I think it's a good choice. Also, If you like the sharpness then go with nickel, not brass. Bb key is generally warm, but nickel gives a bit brightness to it.

Re: Goldie soft/medium?

With my "soft" and "medium" Low Ds the efficiency difference isn't very big. About tone, as I mentioned above the Medium has a bit foggier tone, the Soft a bit purer tone, but the difference was subtle. Thanks! Although I would love to hear if someone can compare the same things...

Re: Goldie soft/medium?

I have Goldie high C, D & E for more than 10 years now and assume these are all medium blowers since I cannot recall that he offered any variations at the time. Does anyone have high Goldie whistles and can compare soft/medium/hard types? As far as I understand, soft blower means it's "easi...

Re: Quick poll: Inexpensive whistle preferences

Waltons Mellow D is my favorite so far. Love that it has a slightly wider bore than other common inexpensive whistles. It's a bit louder and also provides capability to play nuances with air pressure when it comes to vibrato etc... The second choice is Dixon Trad, it is crystal clear, however, it is...
