Re: Flute Hold Right Hand Pinky

I went over to the "Rockstro grip", because it solved a few problems that I was having. But I have since modified it somewhat as I work through things. With the flutes that I have, cross-fingering Bb is pretty much the same pitch as using the key. So I figured that the Bb key is kind of us...

Re: Smart phone/Tunepal aided playing at a session

I sometimes play in a session (not an Irish session) where some people play from music, either printed out and kept in a binder, or on an electronic device. It's a session where people announce the name of the tune in advance. It's not disruptive, but I think it's not that helpful for the people wit...

Re: Keyed Flute learning tips

I would suggest looking at Playford tunes and other English country dance music. Also Swedish music--there is a lot available online. And some Scottish music, such as the Simon Fraser collection. And Irish music has tunes in A major, D minor and G minor. My idea is to move you into more chromatic mu...

Re: What's in Your Tune Book?

I first started writing tunes in a book because I didn't know many tunes. I would just ask people the names of tunes and try to find them in a book, or transcribe them from a record. Later I became a little more affluent, so I was able to buy my own copies of tune collections like Bulmer & Sharp...

Re: Basic flute care question from a beginner

It's been mentioned here before that it's not a good idea to leave your flute assembled when you're not using it it, because the cork can become compressed. Even with a silver flute you should swab it after use, because a high-humidity environment is not good for the pads. If you want a budget case,...

Re: Getting to G minor

It depends on what you mean by G minor. If you mean G Dorian... The flutes that I have can mostly cross-finger Bb pretty well, but F natural is not so good. It can be done on a Baroque flute, but that is probably not what you want for ITM. I can also cross-finger G#, but it is a bit veiled in the lo...

Re: Looking for a mellow sounding tin whistle

I have a couple of "name brand" whistles. One thing that has concerned me over the years is the shrillness in the high end of the 2nd octave. There is a definite difference in the "name brand" whistles, that I won't say, because I rather like both of them. I tend to follow Cathal...

Re: Repeat symbol question

Theoretically a repeated section has a ||: at the beginning and a :|| at the end. The repeat sign at the beginning can be omitted if it is the absolute beginning of the piece. And you may have first and second endings. Irish and Scottish traditional music generally consists of a succession of sectio...

People of that generation might enjoy:
The Old Bog Road
Slievenamon (waltz)
The Snowy-Breasted Pearl
Kelly the Boy from Killane

Taken from the repertoire of an Irish accordion player I used to play with (Ní bheidh a leithéid ann arís).

Re: Derry/Londonderry Tunes

Derry was the major seaport in that part of Ireland. Probably most of the ships taking immigrants from northern Ireland to the USA or Canada would have left from Derry. There is a lot of folklore, songs, etc., about this immigration, but it doesn't pertain just to Derry but to Sligo, Donegal, Monagh...

Re: Cork vs threaded joints

Since I can't go anywhere at the moment, I'm not going to do anything right away, but I will keep monitoring the situation. When we get more freedom of movement, I will look into consulting a specialist.

Cork vs threaded joints

Whenever I want to learn something about flutes, I read Terry McGee's website. Recently I was reading about the problems with threaded joints. As it happens, I have a baroque flute with threaded joints. Right now I'm not playing it that much, but as the weather turns cooler, my friends' thoughts wil...

Re: Irish flute and ........ synth?

Our local independent radio station has New Age music two mornings a week, and I have it programmed to wake me up in a gentle way. Thus I get to hear quite a bit of this kind of music, and he seems right up there with other people working in the area. He gets a nice tone. Is he using an SM58? Goes t...

He would be a likely candidate, since I bought the instrument in San Francisco.

Thanks for the information.
