Re: Grunting

Not sure the OP meant exactly this, but to me it happens to have the vocal cords engaged when trying to pulse on the bottom notes (mostly E and D), or immediately after a glottal stop on these notes. It's like pronouncing "uh" while at the same time blowing. I have been working to eliminat...

Re: Tiny white animals on the flute inside the case

Thank you all for your replies, useful info there. I bought a pistol case as a temporary case for my flute and will figure out in the next days how to disinfect the case.

Re: Tiny white animals on the flute inside the case

Thank you for the replies so far. I managed to take a short clip of a rambling animal: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/f6MCqLFw36w Thankfully the flute (kept outside of the case) does not show any little beast anymore. Now I wrote to the maker and to the case maker to hopefully get some advice on how...

Tiny white animals on the flute inside the case

Hi all, I am having an annoying issue with my flute which I hope that some of you can help with. Some days ago I opened the flute case and noticed like some sort of dust (white) particles around the embouchure hole, mostly on the lower side, where the skin is in contact with wood while playing. I si...

Re: Resources for the Irish Flute Player

Hi Terry I used to collect the resources that I personally found useful in my profile page on TheSession. Here is an up-to-date version, hope this helps. As for learning tunes on the flute, the Virtual Guided Session database (http://www.vgsdb.com/) of the online guided (mid-tempo) sessions hosted b...

Re: Smart phone/Tunepal aided playing at a session

I’m relatively young (37) and have been playing ITM for 1.5 years now. My personal feeling is that this kills much of the spirit of all this. Yes, you get to know the tune title almost instantly and you can even play along, but you miss the chance to get in touch with the others and to make the tune...

Mná na hÉireann

(also posted on https://thesession.org/discussions/46045) Hi all, for a number of reasons I got interested in the poem Mná na hÉireann attributed to Ulster poet Peadar Ó Doirnín (1704-1796) and set to an air by Seán Ó Riada that I love playing on my flute in the key of D dorian/C major. The verses a...

Re: 6 keys...are they really all necessary in ITM?

Hi Marish (I suspect we have somehow already met on the Heatons' Virtual Guided Sessions). I am relatively new to flute and ITM (been playing for 1.5 years), but I'll speak from my own experience - and I'm a strong advocate of keys. You can definitely have lots of fun with a keyless flute in the con...

Re: Eight-key flute: playing low C# and C

Thanks for the comments. After these weeks of C&F blackout, my low C# and low C actually improved quite a lot. A fourth point I would add to the three I mentioned above is 4) make sure the flute stays in position with respect to your embouchure when pressing the keys.

Re: Upgrade completed, with a sacrifice or 2

Great to hear that the site is fully working again: I am relatively new here but I have found lots of useful information in threads of the past, especially in the Flute forum. Thanks to all people who contributed to this.

As for the password, I had no issues with it, too.

Eight-key flute: playing low C# and C

Hi all, as I mentioned in a related discussion on thesession.org (https://thesession.org/discussions/45947) I recently received an eight-key Delrin flute by Galway-based maker Vincenzo di Mauro which I find awesome. My experience is limited, but I am super happy with the flute: beautiful, a joy to p...

Re: Another overwhelmed beginner looking for her first flute

Hi huilu A couple of hints based on my modest (~1-year) experience. Go for a Delrin flute in D by a reputed maker (some of them based in Europe already mentioned above: Somers, Baubet, M&E, Thompson, Vincenzo Di Mauro): this will be a proper instrument (covering most of the Irish music you might...

Re: Advice on buying a 6-key wooden flute

Thanks kidonthemountain. Yes, trying different flutes right now is almost impossible. I've been visiting Terry's website since I started playing the flute and that's a great resource - I guess his flutes must be superb, indeed. I am still reasoning on the possible options and hope I will get to a fi...

Re: Sam Murray flutes through McNeela

Hi gwuilleann, thank you for your comment. Indeed I checked with McNeela, and they were kind and prompt in replying that yes, the 7-day return policy applies to this item as well. I really don't mean to generate further discussions or FUD on Mr Murray. My only concern is that there seems to be a dis...
