I just cannot agree with you. Goat skin, having been cured, is obviously an organic, breathing leather, which needs feeding in order to keep its suppleness. Cracks are more likely to occur if the skin is allowed to dry out. Look at the market for all the preparations to keep leather saddles supple, ...

You can always dampen the skin, but you can liken this to having to clear the windway of your whistle several times during a tune set. It also will change the qualtiy of the skin over time - sometimes leading to splits and cracking. I have played bodhran for many years and have never had a skin spl...

I asked for help/advice on buying my first Low D whistle some weeks ago, and was advised that a Dixon was the best choice. I have not been disappointed. The tone is mellow and chocolately, easy to play using piper's fingering, with low breath requirements, and three octaves easily reached. I am a be...

Good luck with your frankenstinian machinations.

"Still, you can never tell, so can someone explain the rules of etiquette?" I find this question fascinating, as in my experience, there are as many characteristics of sessions, with attendant etiquette, as there are characteristics of the people who attend them. In my locality in the Penn...

There are three possible explanations if my own experience is anything to go by (1) The whistle fairy has pinched it. This is a close relation of the sock fairy who only pinches one of the pair. (2) You have a ghost who moves things for fun. We have one called Emma who fequently moves my glasses fro...

Many thanks for the speedy replys and advice contained therein, especially the links. Obviously sound is extremely important, but as a novice I am wondering about breath control and finger stretching. Are all whistles alike, or are some more forgiving?

Advice on buying a Low D whistle needed!

Hello there, I have just joined this site and have read with great interest the favourable comments about Jerry Freeman 'tweaked' whistles. I live in County Durham, England, a few miles from Dave Shaw. I am considering buying one of his low D whistles, but I am concerned about comments that one need...
