Re: Quiet “discovery”

I think there are two basic ways to make a whistle more quiet - restrict airflow and adjust the blade. Here's an old post where I posted a picture of my attempt to adjust the blade. It isn't pretty, but it works! http://forums.chiffandfipple.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=110716&p=1235079&hilit...

Re: Suggestions for a travel and practice whistle?

A Dixon DX-005 (or even a DX-004) is a solid all-around whistle that isn't very loud. If you want something that can break down into two pieces, a Clare is a good low-cost option, and a Mack Hoover 2-piece is a very quiet travel whistle.

Re: Hot Weather Performing

I don't know if this will help or not, but telescopes should be placed outside long before using to allow them to adjust to ambient temperature. This is about making sure the lenses don't fog up, etc., but maybe letting your whistles warm up before playing would reduce some of the water/condensation...

Mountain Ocarinas in G

Mountain Ocarinas are back in production. They are small (pocket-sized) inline ocarinas in the key of G. The fingering is similar to a tin whistle in the lower octave. What I really like about them, other than I can keep one in my pocket, is that ocarinas are not affected by wind, or at least not as...

Mountain Ocarinas are back!

Mountain Ocarinas are back in production! These are great little inline ocarinas in G. As a tin whistle player, I find that this ocarina's fingering is very similar to a tin whistle, and has the added advantage that it is not as sensitive to windy conditions as a tin whistle. Since most of my playin...

Re: 3d-printed whistle head: strengthening lower octave

Naxrax - do you have the print file (STL) posted anywhere? I'd love to try it out on my printer. I've been pretty disappointed with other whistle prints.
Thanks.

Re: Whistle case in 3 minutes?

Very nice! I made a similar case for my longbow (just a little bigger). Did you put foam in the short tube, or is it just open? I'm thinking that you could cut down the longer tube so that the total closed length is the length of the whistle plus end caps. Then when you place the whistle in the tube...

WTB: Mountain Ocarinas

I am looking for either a warmstone or wooden Mountain Ocarina - preferably in G, but either a C or G would be good (a C AND a G would be great!).
Thanks.

Re: Easiest 2nd Octave Whistle

My Mack Hoover whistle is the easiest 2nd octave whistle in my small collection. My Timothy Potter is also up there. Dixons are also pretty good, and much easier to get. More thoughts: The more I think about it, most of my whistles can hit the 2nd octave easily enough. It just took time learning how...

Re: Best high D whistle under 100€ ?

What is, for you, the best whistle out here for under 100$/100€/100£ ? A lot depends on your needs. For me, one of the main requirements is for it to be quiet. In my experience, Dixons are quieter than the Wild whistles. If you want a louder whistle, the Wild/Killarney whistle may be a better choic...

Re: A quiet practice whistle

Mack Hoover's whistle are about the quietest out-of-the-box. I also agree that the Dixon ABS is pretty quiet, but can be made quieter. I have a short piece of folded copper over the blade that makes it quieter, and also makes it easier to hit the upper octave (I think this is what the Shush whistle ...

Mr. Mute for Ocarinas works on tin whistles too

I bought my daughter an ocarina a few months ago. She likes it but doesn't want to practice in her apartment because it is so loud. When I was looking for solutions I found a device called Mr. Mute. Mr. Mute is a set of mouthpieces that regulates the amount of air that goes in to the ocarina, which ...

I am looking to buy a Karl Ahrens' Mountain Ocarina, preferably in C. Any version (polycarbonate, etc.) will work.
Thanks.
