Re: Is David O'Brien in Canada still building ?

Part of the problem I guess is that a cheap whistle is so very cheap. But so often not very good! But maybe influences our idea of value? I can only think that it's probably lucky that no-one seems to have come up with a really cheap flute - the flute equivalent of a really cheap whistle. That migh...

Re: Fipple inside tube: blow whistle without any part in mouth?

This is a very interesting topic, and I see that some whistle makers/designers have attempted a few things and found some obvious big "simply won't work" ideas or some variations that might help. After playing some cheapy whistles, including the previously popular Clarke Original with the ...

Re: Is David O'Brien in Canada still building ?

When I searched the old link I had, dropping the security alert, the site still comes up as not functional. I found an Obrian whistles (with an A instead of an E in the name), but while it's functional, it seems to be in the UK. The Obrien whistles listed at the Irish Flute Store are all sold out. T...

Re: Communication with Mary Bergin website?

I know nothing about the "vendor" associated there, but if it's a small operation, streamlined employee schedule, then it's common for small operators to NOT have industrial standardized procedures or maximized sales gobbledegook going on for procedures running normally. Over the least sev...

Re: Whistles which sound like the Clarke Original ?

I have a Clarke Original and know the huge air requirement and very breathy tone. Not sure if it's what you'd like, but consider the Shearwater whistles, which have a purer tone than the Clarke but have a breathy part to the tone too. Of course they're not nearly as demanding of air requirement and ...

Re: Benefits of HEAVY/heavy wall whistles?

Lots of great info in this thread! I like the idea of the Goldie with the customized tone hole depth. That's a parallel to the idea of adding a wall around the window to improve tone; it's the idea of considering how the outside of the whistle can be adjusted to improve the whistle, after the mouthp...

Benefits of HEAVY/heavy wall whistles?

I see on many YouTube whistle reviews and whistle maker websites the concern about making whistles at low weight. For the higher keys, meaning smaller whistles, and from my experience, sometimes adding some mass to the whistle adjusts the tone in ways I prefer. And considering we're dealing with suc...

Idly wondering whether Stringbed has one of these in his collection... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/204414013529 In mint condition. https://loopholes.blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Gen_F.jpg Is that an original Generation Egyptian Ambidextrous Whistle with the Sphinx's Riddle Key tuning? I've seen b...

Re: Blowing machine

Just a comment about first/second octave tuning as related to window, tube and tone hole design; as a musician, I'd far prefer a whistle that demands more air in the second octave, as long as some things remain reliable: 1) tuning between octaves. While playing, I don't want to have to fight noticea...

Re: Wooden whistles

I just searched for an MB whistle review on YouTube and couldn't find anything. Not familiar with that maker, but after going through the website, I do get a feeling of confidence that the whistles are well made and the maker knows what they're doing, so probably AT LEAST intermediate quality and li...

Re: Looking to try a low whistle

Live performance whistle reviews, with a reviewer who mentions many aspects of whistle playability, tone and with comparisons to other whistles, is a great help. Nathaniel Dowell, CutiePie and others, run many keys of whistles from gazillions of whistle makers through excellent performance reviews a...

Re: Goldie Narrow Bore Low D

[/quote] Darn, that doesn't work on my design. Four thou over 0.03" windway height turns the tone to sh*t. However, I think I found the solution after some unorthodox experimentation today. The underside of the airblade seems to govern a LOT in my design. Changing my undercut and selectively ad...

Re: An interesting find on Amazon

Before the "embargo" on Russian whistles I bought one of these in "C" (high). The sound was not what I was hoping for. The best I can describe the one I got is to make a comparison of other whistles. I would call them (at least the one I got) the Generation or Feadog of wood whi...

Re: An interesting find on Amazon

If the build quality and performance of it is that good, you've lucked out that it also has the metal mouthpiece, to assist long-term reliability.
Can you post a video on YouTube of it being played?

Re: Goldie Whistles (+ a Susato customization question)

I know generally where F natural holes should go (exactly opposite the E hole). That cannot be optimum unless you want a duplicate E hole! Also, what do you mean by the E hole: the one that's open to sound E or the lowest one fingered? (The former is correct, but I suspect you mean the latter.) I a...
