Re: Greetings, Introduction, and Sindt Whistle Question.

Welcome! Are you perhaps referring to playing a C natural on a D whistle? In that case, I've found the Sindt whistles to be weaker or to be sharp when using the usual cross-fingering (oxxooo). I have to add a finger or two (oxxxoo / oxxxxo) to correct the pitch, at which point the tone becomes harde...

Re: Buyer Beware - whistle similarities

What timing! I just received my first Killarney whistle in the mail about 20 minutes ago, and then on a whim, I checked eBay and saw this very listing. I own a Sindt as well, and they certainly have their similarities, but as Steve noted, the Sindts have their pins filed smooth (or at least, mine do...

Apparently they make a low C with that design as well -- for some reason, it's not available on their website, but I have seen it for sale elsewhere.

Yes, though to be clear, half hole the A position to get G#, and half hole the B position to get A#.

Re: Green Spots on Brass Whistle

It could very well be the leather case causing the verdigris. Chromium sulfate is a common compound for tanning, and sulfates (along with sulfides, chlorides, and some others) can cause the green verdigris to appear on copper. If the whistle hasn't completely dried out before you stick it in the cas...

Re: advice on low F whistle

On F vs F#/Gb.... As busterbill says, if you're always playing alone, then the key really doesn't matter. You'll be transposing the music you play to those keys. If you ever want to play with people, F will be more common than F#, but both will be less common than other keys. The primary physical di...

Here is what this organist considers a "chiffy" organ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWWj08IbPpw&t=216s An interesting exchange in the comments: Hugh Drogemuller: Nothing chiffy to my ear about this . OrganHunters: I know Chiff can mean different things. What does Chiff sound like fo...

Re: New Low D - tuneable but flat when warm and slide is all

A bit off topic at this point, but.... if baroque tuning is usually more around 415 Hz, and Ab/G# is just about 415 Hz, couldn't you just use an instrument a half-step lower?

That's great, I'm glad to hear it!

I heard back from him, and I put in an order for an A whistle. He said he doesn't do G.

Thanks for the information! I'll drop him a line to see if he can make something lower in the A or G range.

Re: Can Anyone Help Me?

Check out the first picture (scroll to the right if you have to) -- it looks like the whistle has almost completely split at the first finger hole.

I'd be curious about the potential of repairs with this material as well... seems like it might be amenable to epoxies?

Re: Whistle designations......

From what I've seen the soprano, alto, tenor, bass designations for whistles are just rough attempts to show the lowest pitch of the instruments. While the use of "low" seems to be relegated for the "A" below a regular "D", and everything below that A. Here's a potentia...
