Re: Aluminum whistle modifications
What's strange is to have E, F#, A, and B give true octaves but for there to be a clear pitch differential between the octaves on the single note G. I dunno, as far as I can tell, octave difference isn't always uniform for all notes. I have plenty of whistles that have funky characteristics like th...

Re: Aluminum whistle modifications
A Low Whistle which has relatively thick walls (as aluminium whistles go) has walls much thinner than a traditional wooden flute, still not thick enough to have much of a chimney. I think the thickest walls I've had on a Low Whistle were the plastic Susato ones. Keep in mind that Baroque flutes, wh...

Re: Aluminum whistle modifications
Thanks for the advice! The only issue is that only second octave G is sharp - and only about 10 cents sharp. First octave G is, if anything, slightly flat (I have to really blow hard to bring it into tune), so I don't want to make it flatter than it is. So your whistle has a problem with the octave...

Re: Aluminum whistle modifications
Mainly a flat F#. But high G is a tiny bit sharp already, so I want to sharpen F# (especially in the first octave) without sharpening second-octave G at all. Assuming it's a D whistle, and working under the assumption that the octaves are true, and setting aside the C#/Cnat issue, is this what you ...

Re: Aluminum whistle modifications
Not to open this can of worms again, and I’m sure you’ve already checked this, but when you say a “flat F#,” is it flatter than what would be expected in just intonation? Even the whistle isn’t fully tuned that way, I’ve found that many have that flatter/sweeter major 3rd. Yeah, I'm ok with a sligh...

Re: Aluminum whistle modifications
Does anyone know a maker in the USA that is willing to modify aluminum whistles, either by slightly altering hole sizes or adding undercutting? What's wrong with the whistle? It might be a very easy fix. Mainly a flat F#. But high G is a tiny bit sharp already, so I want to sharpen F# (especially i...

Re: Aluminum whistle modifications
If they are made by small independent makers and arent mass produced cheaper whistles, perhaps it's worth reaching out to the maker directly first and asking? I would be more insulted if someone disfigured my work and rendered it unplayable rather than ask if I could do it first. If you ask first, ...

Re: Aluminum whistle modifications
I’m quite picky when it comes to intonation, and I have some whistles with unique properties that I love playing, but a couple of notes are off.

Aluminum whistle modifications
Does anyone know a maker in the USA that is willing to modify aluminum whistles, either by slightly altering hole sizes or adding undercutting? It's a long shot, I know, especially for the undercutting. I'm wondering if anyone on the planet does this other than Colin Goldie, and it's looking like no...

Re: The New Kerry Busker High D is Quite Impressive
I'm a little confused about the concept of the 'New Buskers'. I saw that phil had posted a little while back that he had new Low D buskers that play very differently and how proud of them he was, then I saw he posted that he was selling off the 'last of the busker low D's'. Now I see you folks talk...

Re: The New Kerry Busker High D is Quite Impressive
CyberKnight, would you say the current high D Busker is highly expressive, as in can convert a lot of wind dynamics into many variations of tone, volume and effects? Phil Hardy has mentioned that a few times, but he doesn't do video reviews comparing Busker/Thunderbird with specific other whistle m...

Re: The New Kerry Busker High D is Quite Impressive
What's the bore on that? Sounds big, maybe like the Burke "session"? I don't know what the current Burke session bore looks like, but my 2006 Burke session bore fits inside the Busker with room to spare. Burke Session Bore ID: 13 mm (OD: 14.25mm) Busker ID: 16 mm Yeah, what impresses me i...

The New Kerry Busker High D is Quite Impressive
I'd tried a few high D models of the Kerrywhistle "Busker" (or "Thunderbird," or "Chieftain," depending on when it was made), and I never liked it. For one thing, the intonation always seemed very off to me. On the previous models I tried, certain notes in the first oct...

Re: Clogging, Toothpaste, Etc.
I believe I finally found something that works to reduce clogging on my Goldie. If I spray Dawn dish soap not inside the windway, but just outside it, on the area where it opens up to create the window, it seems to reduce clogging dramatically. I believe what was happening is that water was beading ...

Re: Blue Tac or Better?
What is the benefit of using these materials in the first place? I've never really understood it. What actually makes a whistle better by having part of it filled a bit more? I tried a Jerry Freeman tweaked Feadog once, and I found it...about like my normal Feadog, except maybe a bit quieter. I'm wo...
