Re: Looking to learn concertina: suggestions?

Oh, I forgot to mention, I'm interested in the style of concertina used in most Irish trad, I think it's called Anglo, it's the one that sounds different going in than out Yes! Deffo the Anglo type. As mentioned the C/G is more common. You might want to think about the slightly different layout avai...

Re: Looking to learn concertina: suggestions?

Hey y'all, new member here, I'm a multi instrumentalist and play lots of bluegrass but also lots of Irish and Scottish trad music, and I'm interested in learning concertina. I'm wondering what concertina would y'all recommend that is playable, sounds decent, but also won't break the bank? (My budge...

Re: Sé Mo Laoch Patsy Hanly : TG4 sunday 26 January

Pauline was a lovely singer, first time I heard her she sang 'Easter snow', I was mesmerized. Easter Snow. Now there's a story. Apparently there lived a lady in the vicinity called "Esther Snow". I don't know if the song is about her, but the place got her name with a twist to the spellin...

Re: Sé Mo Laoch Patsy Hanly : TG4 sunday 26 January

Yes it's always going to be artificial to varying degrees unless you record people secretly. But the question of how to present this music is interesting. I mean some forms of music are born for the stage. ITM is not one of them. It would certainly have been no more expensive to stage the performan...

Re: Nonsense, other names and so on.

How about consulting a thesaurus - this is what they are for after all :-) old galimatias You can look up the Slang/vulgar part yourself. :-) I think we should revive the word galimatias. It's great. https://www.yourdictionary.com/galimatias Andrew Now there is one I have never heard of before. Lik...

benhall.1 wrote:"Twaddle" is, as far as I know, prevalent throughout Great Britain and Ireland. "Balderdash" is also pretty universal.

I'm not quite sure what you're after here ... ? Common words for codswallop?
Ah the 'cod's stroke'. Wonder did some event give rise to that one?

Nonsense, other names and so on.

Ok I admit I had to re-read this book's review. https://www.amazon.com/Making-Sense-Nonsense-Logical-Spirituality/dp/0738763160 But it go me wondering about other names for 'nonsense', not in the dictionary. I fondly recall a local Surrey Uk word ' twaddle' as one contender. Then there was my father...

Tune ID's.

The lead in butt end of a tune is 'Miss Monahan's, Reel' then one that I sort of know to play but not the name of it, driving me mental because cannot recall that. Next they do a localish tune 'The Ballyconnell Reel' ( Cavan Co.), and on the end of the clip one that I neither know how to play nor it...

Re: New or used flute for a beginner?

Love the help offered to a newbie ! Great site for information. Now I notice folks spend a bit of time on embouchure, and that's commendable. But, and here I defer to super expert exhibition of style, posture really does matter. Because it does! Not only for TW, but even more so for the transverse f...

Re: Rudall, Carte & Co. 7022 on E-bay

Rudall, Carte & Co. 7022 is listed now on Ebay. Bidding ends the 6th of January. Looks to be in fine condition, original box with lid unattached. there doesn't seem to be any cracks in the head joint or barrel. nickel silver keys, salt spoon Eb, strange metal extra ferrule, or plug, on the end ...

Forgetting the Anglo Concertina is not good!

I just this week learned a very severe lesson. If you have acquired basic skill on the Anglo Tina then it really has to be kept going! If you stop for some years, as I did, then most of that know-how is gone! Now relearning, with different fingerings, tunes I thought I had down! And to make it even ...

Re: Results from Irish musical inspiration?

To your last question, yes! I lived for a long time within a vibrant Morris folk dance community, and I loved the happy tunes they dance to. So all my early attempts at making new music have a Morris dance flavor, and some are in between structures creating something new. Later studying modern Greek...
