Re: How to practice rolls / cuts?
Newbie in the same boat with you too. You mentioned the keys. Are you also trying it on a Boehm keyed flute? The feedback I've gotten from a teacher that has helped is that we classical players have built up a lot of muscle memory to crispy fully open or fully close a key. Even when we think we are ...

Re: Opinion or advice sought on IPR and patent law
You did not mention which country you are in. The USA is a first-to-file system. So, yes, my understanding is that someone else could file if you do not and claim ownership (this change happened after I graduated law school and I do not practice in patent law). https://www.uspto.gov/patents/first-in...

Re: Any Tips for Slurring Into 3rd Register?
You're tonguing it because you are relying on the extra boost of air speed you get from suddenly releasing the pressure built up behind your tongue, and on that slight pause in the sound to get your embouchure and fingers changed into position before the new note sounds. You therefore have to work o...

Re: Source for synthetic corks/stoppers?
Do you mean replacing the cork on the tendons/joints with thread? I bow to all the experienced Irish flutes for that one (yes, I'm asking just about the cork inside the head joint). You should be putting cork grease on the joints to keep the cork from drying out, right?

Re: Source for synthetic corks/stoppers?
You are correct--Robert Bigio will make custom stoppers and crowns for Irish flutes. He responded right back with pricing and what measurements he needs .

Re: Source for synthetic corks/stoppers?
Thanks for the website. I'll send him a message. Natural cork dries out and shrinks over time and loses its air-tight seal. This is why wine bottles are properly stored on their side to keep the cork wet. Synthetic corks do not dry out and shrink, which is why they have become popular for mass-marke...

Source for synthetic corks/stoppers?
I'd like to replace the natural cork on my flute with a synthetic one for more durability in extreme climates. Is there a source for them? And how do you go about matching sizes to your particular flute? I'm a newbie from the classical world where cork size is standardized, so feel free to assume I'...

Re: ISO Eugene Lambe-style metal headjoint trad flute
Thank you all for your replies and explanations. From the pictures of Lambe flutes, I was intrigued by the idea of sticking with the sound and embouchure of my Boehm flute head joint, which I prefer over the wooden sound, while ditching the keywork (And, yes, I do live in an extreme environment and ...

ISO Eugene Lambe-style metal headjoint trad flute
Anyone out there who makes trad flute bodies for modern Boehm headjoints à la Eugene Lambe? Or who makes a complete flute with a metal headjoint and keyless body?

[Thread revival. - Mod] The Flute 360 Podcast did two episodes on home recording set-ups. Her husband is a sound tech, so it's solid advice. It's episodes #122 and #123 https://heidikaybegay.com/episodes/page/8/ . Her advice is to mic the room. If you have the ability to mix tracks, my flute podcas...

Re: Earplugs for Concerts Needed Badly
[Thread revival. - Mod] I use musician earplugs--they cut down the decebel levels without interfering with overall sound. I hear (pun???) they are great for concerts. I use mine for practicing the upper flute register, or when sitting next to the piccolo in orchestra. I bought the same brand my pic...

Two-part versus three-part Tony Dixon low D?
Yet another newbie with a whistle-buying question. I want a starter, tunable low D that's tough and inexpensive so I can travel with it and leave in my car in Tucson without fear. Read a lot on the forums about the Tony Dixon as good starter whistles. The two-piece is definitely affordable but the t...
