Forbes Delrin & Travel Pouch (Keyless D)

Offering a Delrin flute by Rob Forbes, in the Key of D. Comes with a convenient pouch to transport the flute in (velcro closure). Rob Forbes is in my opinion among very few makers who offer an affordable choice for beginners that sounds how an Irish flute should. I narrowed my list down to Forbes an...

Re: Grinters and Wilkes Flutes

That makes sense. I just listened to a recording of yours, Road to Glencpisdale, and I dig your style, soulful. Engaging without being pushy. I'm no expert either, but I think one thing that stands out is your phrasing. A lot of players don't catch me with their phrasing because they rush and I can'...

Re: Grinters and Wilkes Flutes

I agree with the list so far. (Hamilton, Murray, Grinter, Wilkes, Watson) I wonder if Jezquel might be included, or if I'm mistaken? (Full disclosure: I'm going by recordings I hear online, and while I typically listen to more than one of a maker, since players vary more than flutes do, it's still a...

Re: Flutomat site down, I saved files, anyone want to host t

Thanks Peter . I didn't think of checking the stickies. I'm not used to time limits for edits, but it will help me be more mindful, so for that I appreciate it. Here we go again, having to correct a post. Luckily within the time limit, so I editted the mistake out. Matt , Above, I said there was no ...

Re: Flutomat site down, I saved files, anyone want to host t

Peter , thanks for explaining that to me, I tried PM'ing a mod, but didn't get an answer. Good to know, and I'll be more careful to doublecheck details. Wow, I had no idea something this detailed existed, that's great, thanks Terry for mentioning it, and Tunborough for creating it! It's true, the f...

Re: Foot operated drone

I thought a shruti couldn't be "played" like a harmonium, i.e. you have to adjust the key by moving a small lever, rather than pressing keys? A harmonium might be easier to operate, if you could somehow enlarge the key surface. An idea for how to do this could come from looking at african ...

Re: Flutomat site down, I saved files, anyone want to host t

Terry , made a beautfiful-sounding F bamboo flute from the flutomat. I realize the flutomat is of little or no use to most makers on these boards. However, it works for basic cylindrical flutes very well IMO. Amateurs may wish to practice on a homemade pvc or bamboo flute. One octave is enough to l...

Flutomat site down, I saved files, anyone want to host them?

I see the flutomat site is down, and the only site hosting them currently has the data wrong. (I know this because it's saying a D4 flute, with 1/8" walls and a 3/4" diameter needs to be 30" long) I have the originals, which I downloaded for offline reference. They're just html and cs...

Re: Foot operated drone

Interesting idea, I wish you luck. A bit of googling and you can find a craftsperson who can make your dream a reality. I just googled "homemade wooden organ" and then clicked this picture of a homemade foot powered keyboard. It's not what you're looking for, but I found it inspiring for t...

Re: Flutes in hand luggage (EU)???

Here is the somewhat recently updated FAA rule on small instruments as carry-on. The EU may have similar guidelines, I would look it up before I flew. If they refuse it, you can go back to check it as luggage, if you get there early enough. They usually have plastic baggies for small individual item...

Re: Mopane vs. African Blackwood

Jim : Glad it was interesting. Good to know Jim, I find it's rare that anyone can hear what I'm hearing, I realize these are very subtle distinctions, but I enjoy tuning into subtle details. I agree that the vibration of the flute isn't significantly acting as a "speaker" and sending out ...

Re: Mopane vs. African Blackwood

Whoops! Thanks Kmag for pointing that out! I've taken in a lot recently and got a bit turned around. I apologize for not double checking my facts. I think I got confused because it's is a very similar color, and after checking I see Olive is only 1lb heavier than Boxwood (62lbs vs 61), so it would h...

Re: Competitive benefits of conical and cylindrical flute bo

Thanks Geoffrey for the thoughtful response and prompting me to listen to those clips. I'm sorry I didn't do so before posting. I had read your post, but must have skimmed past the last couple lines, as I tried to take in the whole thread quickly. They're cylindrical? I would never have guessed that...

Re: Mopane vs. African Blackwood

Jim : You're welcome! (another clip I found interesting, and my two cents, to follow below) Chas : I was using the word "flavor" metaphorically, as in the timbre or color of the sound. But interesting story about the aroma of rosewoods! To clarify about density, Mopane is 15% less dense t...

Re: Competitive benefits of conical and cylindrical flute bo

To Keith Sandra: I assume you mean comparative benefits? To Geoffrey Ellis: I wrote a comment in response to you, but it seems off topic so I'll post a new thread about it. The idea I have in mind is a single piece conical student flute. [Edit: I am removing the rest of my post after listening to th...
