Re: How many unique sounds/pitches during a roll

And if the cut ends exactly when the tap occurs, that's another one less. And that wouldn't be a roll. A long roll (starting with the main note) will have five sounds (three main pitches and two blips). A short roll (starting with the cut) will have four. There are places where you'd want one and p...

How many unique sounds/pitches during a roll

I'm starting to (try to) do rolls. I understand it's a cut and a tap on a note and have watched some videos and practiced a bit. I'm curious about how many sounds/pitches are most desirable. And perhaps, there is not one answer but it depends on style and desired result. It seems depending on timing...

Re: Whistle Instruction

My dad was an accomplished amateur musician that played piano, sax, clarinet, and flute. When he passed away, I went through his huge collection of sheet music and found a copy of "The Whistler's Pocket Companion". I got a whistle and started learning from that book. I have an older editio...

Re: What effect does bore size have

You know what is an interesting exercise is.... You should be able to find a free spectrum analyzer app that runs on your smartphone. Maybe on a desktop also but I haven't tried it. I have one called "Spectroid" on my Android phone. I've turned it on and played some whistle notes into it. ...

Cuts on second octave

I watched a couple tutorials on cuts and they go up to B on the first octave. Obviously you can't cut a C#; I suppose you could substitute a tap. I've tried to figure out how to do cuts on the second octave. I noticed with a D 0xxxxx if I try to do a cut like 0x0xxx, it goes down not up. And with xx...

Can my username be changed?

I type-oed my user name when I joined. I can't find a way to change it. it was supposed to be "learn2turn" but a key bounced and it came out as "leearn2turn". Is it possible for an admin to change it.

Thanks for the info. The messages still appear in the Outbox so I guess they have not been read.

Responses to User Instrument forum.

I know that follow-ups aren't the correct course of action in the Used instrument forum. I responded to two ads via private message about a week ago a day or two after each ad was posted. I haven't heard anything back. Is there any way to tell if my message was received and viewed? I included my ema...

Re: Another music reading question

I wonder; in the grand total collection of all Irish/Celtic music composed to date, are there more than half a dozen whole notes used? Is Irish/Celtic music originally composed mainly for dance? If so, maybe that's why. I have a stronger background in bluegrass which also includes AABB fiddles tune...

Re: What effect does bore size have

...As the bore gets narrower the fundamental gets weaker and the 2nd octave becomes easier to achieve. ... Not what I would have expected to hear. My narrower bore high-D whistles, Oak, Generation, Feadog, I find to have an ear-splitting second octave and the highest notes-- B,C#,D are very hard to...

What effect does bore size have

I'm a beginner and I was looking at some of my high D whistles comparing bore sizes. I noticed that my Oak slides exactly into my Dixon Trad while my Dixon Trad fits exactly in my Walton Mellow. So now I'm curious. With respect to both sound and playability, what are the effects of bore size? Is the...

I was thinking of trying that. I normally use XXXXXX for both octaves out of force of habit but I figured I could try OXXXXX as it's more likely not to slide between octaves.

Slur 1st to 2nd Octave.

I am a beginner and I just started to try to play some slow airs where virtually all the notes in a phrase are slurred together. I am find slurring from the low to high octave a bear, like B to D, one finger to six up three half steps in tone. I can easily do that when tonguing but if I slur it, I g...

Re: Got my first Low-D

I'll also 2nd the vote in favor of daily practice, with one addition. This quote comes from a book on weight-training: "Practice makes perfect, but practice perfect". The idea is, some portion of your practice time should be devoted to slow+relaxed+accurate playing. The speed will come by...

Got my first Low-D

I mostly play mandolin, bluegrass and a tad of jazz chording. But I found a book on playing whistle in my Dad's old pile of sheet music a couple years ago and bought a few cheap whistles so I'd have something to noodle around with when traveling. This winter I tore a ligament in a knuckle skiing and...
