Re: Tuning Dixon Alto A DX007A

Okay, I gave it a good firm twist and got it to turn. Now I can adjust it. But, it's still flat (434hz) and the tube is all the way in against the stop inside the fipple. Am I going to have to trim the tube? If so, is there a recommended procedure? Re cents, I don't know what the tuner app on my pho...

Re: Anybody there with experience in Tony Dixon Alto-Whistle

Oh one last thought. I really like the fipple shape. The curve on the bottom feels very natural and I like that it's a simple cylinder without any extra material.

Re: Anybody there with experience in Tony Dixon Alto-Whistle

I'm very much a novice player so a more-competent player might have different observations. I recently bought a Dixon A brass as I wanted a lower whistle. I really like the tone. There's quite a bit of air to it. The thing I like about whistles is a mournful tone more so than a bright tone which is ...

Tuning Dixon Alto A DX007A

I recently bought a Tuneable Alto A Whistle (Brass Trad) by Tony Dixon DX007A. Right now it's flat. I happen to be running a spectrum analyzer (spectroid on android) as I was curious about harmonics and it registered at 434hz. It's 6 cents flat on a tuner app. The fipple is stuck on the body such th...

Re: Looking for a chart to expand musical capabilities

If you want a good example of modes, look up the fiddle tune "Drowsy Maggie". You'll find a gazillion examples of sheet music, recordings, and tutorials. The entire tune can be played on the natural notes of a whistle without any half-holing; it always uses the same notes (and always has t...

Re: Looking for a chart to expand musical capabilities

Here's a reference on modes -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mode_(music) This are the scales you get if you take a standard instrument and start on each of the seven notes. I think I understand this. So basically I would always start at the first note then I would start playing half notes or cross...

Re: Looking for a chart to expand musical capabilities

Quick answer on starting with E on a D whistle is that is in mode "E Dorian", a minor-sounding key with the 3rd and 7th flatted. In general minor-sounding keys have a flatted 3rd.

If you start on B, you are in "B minor", aka "B Aeolian" mode, flatted 3rd, 6th, and 7th.

Re: Novice thinking about getting a Low A ( I think)

I ended up ordering a Dixon A from Mcleena. Should arrive from across the pond in a couple weeks. I also bought a Generation Bb on Amazon for about $15 or so and it arrived in a day and I'd have one more whistle to play around with and another key. It plays well enough to be quite usable for the mon...

Re:

I found out that you can remove a Generation's mouthpiece by immersing it in boiling water. Just to follow on from that, I was doing a bit more of this today. It's important not to leave the whistle standing upside down in the water, because the mouthpiece will go soft and deform as it slumps under...

Novice thinking about getting a Low A ( I think)

(First, I sure darn with there was a way to search for "low a" but it says all terms must be at least three characters.) I have a few high D whistles I play a few minutes every day and thought I might like to get a lower pitch one. I want to stay in the $50-90 range. Reasons for wanting a ...

My understanding is there is a quite a German influence on Mexican music and much of it does indeed have a polka sound. Google "música norteña".

Newbie question volume on high register on High D whistle

Hi, newbie here came to whistle from a bit of playing fiddle tunes on bluegrass mandolin. But I found a book on whistles and ending up buying a couple high D whistles. I really like trying to play them but what I've found is that I can't control volume as how hard the wind is controls the octave, no...

Re: Tin whistle playing in American old time music

[Thread revival. - Mod] I'm a newbie to playing whistles. I just found this thread. I've played bluegrass mando, no Maestro here but I could survive at an intermediate jam and take breaks on fiddle tunes I know. Am also not at all into purity of genre (but I'd never play anything in wanted at a jam...
