Re: Low-D piper's grip, both hands or just lower.
Thanks for all the great info. I definitely piper grip with the right hand but I'm going to keep practicing it with the left hand. I did try one thing today that was harder. One march I play has a chromatic four-note run with a G# accidental -- F#,G,G#,A. Half-holing the G# on my high-D with a tip i...

Low-D piper's grip, both hands or just lower.
The question is whether to use the standard grip or piper's grip on the upper hand (assuming lower hand always uses piper's grip) on a low-D whistle? I could skip to the obvious answer and tell myself -- practice both ways for a while and see what you like best. I can easily usage a standard grip on...

Re: Complete beginner to low whistle (D)
I'm a novice also and play with both a High-D and Low-D (and have some cheap inbetweens I dabble with). Lots of good advice above on low-Ds. If you want to start with the low-D follow the advice. But decent high-Ds are inexpensive so way not get one also? You can leave it on the coffee table when yo...

Re: My Humus Recipe.
The thing I like about that recipe is I never have to look it up as the ratios of the main ingredients are so easy. Two cans of chick peas. Then get the 1/4 cup measuring cup, fill twice with lemon juice, once with olive oil, and once with tahani. Then season it the way you like it. The only reason ...

Re: Whistles with similar sound to Dixon polymer low D?
Same key or different keys?MK whistles can vary quite a bit, I have two, one honks in the lower octave, the other has a sweet second octave but a weaker first octave. My Dixon plays no problems.

Re: Whistles with similar sound to Dixon polymer low D?
Being a novice, my only exposure to a low-D is the Dixon polymer I bought so I could dabble with a low D. I was playing it more this last weekend. The thing I really notice is how "breathy" the sound is. There's a lot of "air whoosh" sound in addition to the note it is ringing. I...

Re: What's a fipple?
It's a lot like the starship Enterprise ... except for the warp engines, transporter, phasers, and tribbles. But otherwise very similar. The US Enterprise was created in the attempt to giver an ocarina more of a linear whistle/flute-like playing for both hands, holes being placed along the main eng...

Re: Whistles with similar sound to Dixon polymer low D?
Can anyone comment on air requirements of the Dixon polymer low-D vs. other low-D whistles, e.g., MK Pro? I'm a novice and should play mostly a high-D for now which I do. But I have a Dixon polymer low-D as it is inexpensive and I want to dabble with a low whistle now and then. The one thing I find ...

Re: What exactly is a “casadh”?
[Thread revival. - Mod] Old thread. I have the same book. Googled "casadh whistle ornament" and ended up here. I'm a novice a got likewise confused. Other resources I've seen called a "cut" a three sequence ornament-- start on the main note, very quickly raise and lower a finger...

Re: Want to Trade Dixon Alto A Traditional Brass Whistle for another alto A
I suspect you may have the same experience with this whistle that I have. I'm a novice and bought a Tuneable Alto A Whistle (Brass Trad) by Tony Dixon a year ago for two reasons-- I wanted to start learning to play a moderately lower whistle; I wanted to play some fiddle tunes in D on an A whistle (...

Re: Best mellow, easily in-tune high D whistle?
I really like my Dixon Trad high D (model DXTRADN). It cost $28 which is twice the price of the cheap whistles but that's still chump change. All my other high-D whistles (all in the $8-15 range) start to require more air and get A LOT LOUDER when you get up into the upper part of the higher octave....

Good bang-for-the-buck Low-G
I'm a novice so I don't need anything fancy but I thought it might be nice to add a low-G to the growing collection. Don't want to spend a ton of $$$ but would like something tunable.

Anyone play whistle in bluegrass / foik / country oldtime jams?
I've played mostly mandolin -- bluegrass, oldtime, folk for the last many years. One thing I like about it is bluegrass and related folky country styles is it seems to be the easiest generate to find a jam the intermediate level. So, I can find people to play with. I've dabbled in whistle for a coup...

Re: How many unique sounds/pitches during a roll
And if the cut ends exactly when the tap occurs, that's another one less. And that wouldn't be a roll. A long roll (starting with the main note) will have five sounds (three main pitches and two blips). A short roll (starting with the cut) will have four. There are places where you'd want one and p...
