Re: Is Bawu Flute Hard to Learn to Play?

Thanks for your reply, @tonehole.

I bought a bawu and am having fun learning it. Just as you said, the embouchure is easy.... no problem.

Thanks again!

Re: Aulos Tenor Recorder Identifying

well, to reply to an ancient thread.... Thanks for this info. I was able to determine I have an Aulos 311. I bought it from an airport "lost luggage" sale decades ago. As the Saunders info says, the key is delicate. Mine got broken but superglue fixed it up. Thanks to modern glues! I have ...

Is Bawu Flute Hard to Learn to Play?

I was wondering how hard the bawu is to learn to play? I'm well experienced with fipple flutes (recorder, ocarina, tin whistle, etc). But I have no experience with the standard transverse concert flute, so I haven't learned the embouchure for transverse edge-blown flutes. Is the Bawu a little easier...

Re: How to convert a melody to ABC or Sheet Music

Thanks, @Greenwood. I tired Bearaudio and several other mp3 -> midi and wav -> midi converters, but they didn't work well enough for me. They added too many extra notes to deal with, at least in my case. I did find that certain flutes worked better with them than others. For example, my alto ocarina...

Re: How to convert a melody to ABC or Sheet Music

Hi Keith, Thanks for your feedback. I'll keep in mind your advice that EWIs are a whole new experience. I've played many different woodwinds, but I understand that EWIs may not be similar to them at all. Nevertheless, if I can figure out some of the basic parameters for EWIs (posted in my original q...

How to convert a melody to ABC or Sheet Music

Hi, I've been composing tunes for years. To preserve them, I play them on one of my flutes (recorder, ocarina, or tin whistle) and tape record them. I'd like to translate my solo tunes to either ABC notation or sheet music. I tried computer programs that automatically translate from the captured MP3...

Idea: A Thread on Reviews

Just an idea - have a separate thread for people to contribute reviews of their instruments. They have such a thread over at The Ocarina Network and I've found it to be one of their most useful features (see http://theocarinanetwork.com/ocarina-reviews-f42/?sid=c0e3f4a591265f8a31562a37839b91dd ) Mea...

Re: Please Help ID This Recorder

Good feedback, yes definitely not a recorder. Trying to play it, it voices very poor, out-of-tune sound. This is with the two odd holes left open. And also after closing either one or both of them. Looking at it closely, I notice the fingering holes are all the same size and are equally spaced. And ...

Please Help ID This Recorder

I bought this recorder from an estate sale in VA. It's very old, and has 2 VERY UNUSUAL extra holes near its end. I'm an experienced recorder player and AFAIK because of those 2 extra holes this is not a playable instrument. Could anyone please help identify it? What is it? NORMAL: 20" length, ...

Re: Best Inexpensive wood soprano Recorder?

Hey, thanks so much for the leads. I found a half dozen decent-looking Mollenhauer pearwood and plumwood sopranos in my price range over at Thomas-Mann based on your lead about the Mollenhauer Student Descant. Good selection, now I'll research how they sound. See -- http://m.thomannmusic.com/mollenh...

Best Inexpensive wood soprano Recorder?

Any recommendations for a good wooden soprano recorder that's inexpensive? I'm mainly looking for a pleasing wood sound. Price range would be $20 to $100 US, with maybe 40 to 70 being ideal. (I already have plastic sopranos.)

Thank you for your recommendations.

Re: Is a Flutophone an Ocarina?

I found a couple photos on Ebay that show straight into the bottom of a flutophone bell and a tonette that has a bell. As folks have stated here, the tonette is closed (the bell apparently is just for show, it doesn't open into the bottom of the tonette's air chamber). The flutophone has a pretty sm...

@Nanohedron -- excellent point about my possibly reading too much into the Wikipedia article. Thank you.

Anyone got a Flutophone here they can look at ?

Re: Is a Flutophone an Ocarina?

Thank you for your replies. The good ol' Flutophone! Yes, the Wikipedia article on "tonette" leads me to believe that the Flutophone is in fact an ocarina (a closed end vessel flute). The reason is that the other instruments that article names -- the tonette and the song flute -- I can per...

Is a Flutophone an Ocarina?

Is the Flutophone an ocarina? In other words, does it have a closed end ? I am talking specifically about the instrument shown here -- http://www.amazon.com/First-Note-FN153-Firstnote-Flutophone/dp/B000EEHE5G/ref=pd_cp_267_2?pd_rd_w=jsMOE&pf_rd_p=ef4dc990-a9ca-4945-ae0b-f8d549198ed6&pf_rd_r=...
