Re: Mainstock plug

Years ago i needed something like this when wanting to test for leaks in my bag I found large corks available for folks like potters making storage jars and found one that worked well. I don't recall where I got it from but just found this seller on Etsy who supplies a variety of corks. https://www....

Re: Rushing the Bore to Flatten Notes

Yes I know the physicists will argue that a parallel bore has a different regime but the effect is similar. Years ago at a folk club in London I saw Liam O'Flynn having trouble tuning his bass drone. Eventually he removed the end and put something inside and then proceeded to finish tuning. Later I...

Re: Best thread for binding joints

Thanks Geoff. I wasn't after niche stuff, more whether a pure cotton versus cotton blended with a man made fibre was preferred, and thoughts on thickness. With regard to the clearances on my set I would say they are quite small apart from the groove for the O ring. What they lack is any recessed / c...

Best thread for binding joints

The joints on Pat McNulty pipes were made with O rings to seal the joints. These have always been a little problematic and I am planning to change to the more typical thread bindings. I believe that hemp thread, as on highland pipes is too heavy, but some cotton threads are too thin. What threads do...

Re: Ebay Items

Definitely Scottish smallpipes, and look to have two chanters (A and D?). I've messaged the seller that they are not uilleann.

Re: Is it possible?

Maybe a deliberate use of hyperbole to encourage pipers to set up their pipes properly. RORY This could be the case. I have had occasions when teaching Northumbrian pipes to others where I have had students who overblow their pipes and are convinced that they are not able to get enough air into the...

Re: Lower regulator notes jumping the octove / squeaking

Agreed enough from the buffers. So before anyone else gets us sidetracked on a spur line... what news from the sleeper ( OP) ? Has he tried any of the suggestions ? Would he say he aprieciates the time taken to try and help or should we just not bother to respond in future to cries for help ? I'm s...

Re: Lower regulator notes jumping the octove / squeaking

The bass reed Allan made has a normal main staple that slipped over a short narrower tube which was hemped and inserted into the end of the regulator. This was intended as an easier way of adjusting the reed position because you had the ability to move it in or out on the narrower tube rather than h...

Re: Lower regulator notes jumping the octove / squeaking

Regarding the OP's topic; to my mind it all starts and ends with the chanter reed. I see people using such a powerfull chanter reed that they hardly have the strength to blow the set and end up using the bellows like a compressor and the stretch in the bag to create the force needed. It was interes...

Lower regulator notes jumping the octove / squeaking

I'm looking for advice on how get the lower notes on my baritone and bass regulators to sound the correct note consistently. The D of the baritone is good most of the time but does squeak randomly, while the G on the bass will squeak more often than not. Any remedies?

Re: chanter identification

I have a set of Charles Roberts Northumbrian pipes and have just checked to see if there is a similar stamp. However the only stamp is on the stock ferrule and reads C. ROBERTS SLIGO.

Re: More than three drones?

The head of the music department at Sotherby's in London during the 1980s and 90s was a Northumbrian piper who used to keep records and photographs of all the pipes that came through the auction house. He told me of an ornate (probably presentation) set of uilleann pipes by Robert Reid of Tyneside wi...

Re: Thin chanters from modern makers

My first full set was bought from Doug Wilkinson and Glen McCarthy just over 40 years ago. Cost £400 which I had saved from my summer job while a student. Carried them back, wrapped in cardboard, from their workshop in east London to my hall of residence on the bus. Chanter was definitely chunky, wi...
