Re: Whistles with good volume

Is Goldie the new overton? I got mine made loud for playing outdoors. It has a very narrow wind channel so needs plenty of pressure but it is my favourite.

Re: D-minor pentatonic on tin whistle

You can already get G major pentatonic on a normal tube. Therefore you get E minor pentatonic and the 3 other relative penta. modes. Just keep certain fingers down as you would if the holes weren't there. Easy :) So if you really want D minor, without cross fingering malarkey, use an A whistle. D i...

Thanks for the replies. How does the Brinklow pipe work without overblowing? A little thumb hole somewhere? I knew the reed plays an octave below the fipple but didn't know about the 12th overblow. My sop mouthpiece on a usual D whistle tube - no holes cut yet gives a B3. I have a Xaphoon but can't ...

Fipple or reed

I have a soprano sax and am thinking why not take a tube with 6 holes and plug in the mouthpiece? Anybody done this? Any advice on construction? I know you can buy these things but not cheap. On the other hand one could I supose stick a whistle head on a sax!

So here is a little science project. Make a whistle with one small hole then make it bigger more and more. Measure frequency against hole diameter.
The resulting graph could be interesting.
Any volunteers?

http://www.warwick.ac.uk/~maaac/images/Overton-Low-D.jpg This one was made for me by Bernard Overton. It has the 'close finger spacing' option. It sounds like yours is the same. I don't notice the difference in volume. Holes 1,2,3 are just under 10mm in daimeter. Then we have 6,10,7 mm for the bott...

Anybody transcribed Leme Be The One from the positivly testcard interview? Or just the names of the notes would be helpful. I'm working on a tune taught by Brian Finnegan at the 06 Burwell bash will post mp3 and abc when I have a better grip on it.

Feathers are pretty good for the windway and if you use duck feathers get a moisture repellant bonus too. :)

I find transcribe! from seventhstring.com invaluable. It can change speed and pitch and identify notes. Audacity is great for recording multy tracks too.

Thanks MTguru. I have attached the circle of 5ths list to my crib sheet:
tunes I know with first few notes.
I think my matrix wins on ease of use but yours wins hands down on compactness.

Key changes

I have updated this one. Easy to figure out what key arises if I use an F whistle instead of a D but what if the music is written in Ab ? How to rewrite the score in a more friendly key and choose a whistle so the result comes out in the key of Ab? http://www.maths.warwick.ac.uk/~bjs/key-change.jpg
