Re: Flute Crutch?
Thanks for your replies. Some responses to your inputs: I do not quite understand how my chin can help support the flute. References? I had a young folk flute teacher for one starter class, who had not had a student with my problem. I am using piper type grip but how do I support the weight of the f...

Flute Crutch?
I have been playing whistle for a few years but also have bought an inexpensive (unkeyed) Dixon Flute. My problem is a left hand injury which prevents me from holding the flute properly. My question: is there any sort of shoulder rest which would support the flute head leaving my left hand to access...

Re: Used Dixon whistle prices
The Dixon Brass Trad D I purchased maybe 2010-11 has a different head than the Dixon Nickel Trad D purchased December 2013. If you want the excruciating details search this site for "At what point did the Dixon Trad head design change?" and view my post of March 6 2019.

Re: Timeline of Whistle Makers?
An obvious thought occurs to me that old videos would show many whistles being played in decades past, which could be identified. Tommy Makem, Dubliners, and the anthology DVD Come West Along the Road for example.

Re: CLAIRE MANN : Online Flute & Whistle Workshops - 12/19 D
Sounds worthwhile, but keep in mind for the Americas, that the classes are UK time as below. They are considering recording the classes for those who cannot make the assigned time. Check the site. Saturday 12 December 10.30-11.15: Session 1 13.30-14.15: Session 2 Saturday 19 December 10.30-11.15: Se...

Re: Generation Convert
To ecadre-- Could you elaborate on this "Two or three layers of thread in a band, which is then treated with superglue or clear nail varnish" I have a Generation D I tweaked to make quieter (and better too) but the head has slight crack I keep an eye on. I considered using a small hose cla...

Re: Monster Grips for slippery whistles
If you need only greater surface traction, a quick fix is Scotch Blue tape. It comes off easily and has not made a mark on anything I have used it on. I apply a wedge of it on guitar picks to get a better grip.

Re: Low F whistle ??
I think the actual question asked by the original poster Scottie is essentially, how do you play with others at a session when you are not using a D whistle, high or low. Responses that tell the poster to use another whistle do not try to address his question as to how to use his F whistle. For the ...

Whistle Tune Files on iPad
I have accumulated many whistle tunes written in formal notation in jpeg and pdf files which I would like to store on an iPad. Can anyone recommend a tool or way of organiziing these files? No, I do not read from them as i play. They are a reminder for tunes learned a while ago or when someone plays...

Re: 5/4 Time
A few off the top of my head:
Slip Jigs are 9/8 and pretty common in Ireland.
Several Beatles tunes employ odd time signature changes: "All you need is love", "She said, She Said",

Re: Do whistles wear out?
L. E. McCullough's favorite whistle Bluezette died at age 24, in 1999. Search for that name and his and you will get to the story. Also a casual cleaning works well normally, but after some time a fine mulm-like deposit is not removed by the casual cleaning and a more thorough (non-abrasive) can res...

Re: Tin whistle ornamentation!
Books, and videos are fine but a live or Skype teacher is much better. There are several listed on the Chiff Instructor list as others have mentioned. My own live teacher at NY Irish Arts Center has returned to Dublin County and gives Skype lessons, which I have also used. She is listed on the "...
