Re: the now

It's common throughout Scotland, either as 'the nou' or 'the now'. Standard Scots usage, in fact. English equivalents would be (1) just now, at present; just a moment ago (2) in a moment, soon. (Concise Scots Dictionary, 2nd edn.) I'm not sure if you'd hear it over the border in in Northumberland. I...

Recording solo whistle

Hi Can anyone help here? I spent the morning recording some whistle tracks in a friend's studio: though he's a professional, he has never recorded solo whistle before, and we ran into some problems - - a ticking rhythmic noise -could this be the tapping of my fingers on the whistle as I play? - slig...

Re: Road to the Isles

Play it in A, so you have the g natural. Scottish pipe tunes like this, with their 9-note myxolidian scale, sit best in A on a d whistle, to my (Scottish) ear. (Some years ago I bought a Dixon D-Plus, which has an extra 7th hole for low c natural, but I rarely use this feature. It's made in 3 parts,...

Re: Low D - Wood Anyone?

I would strongly recommend the Garvie blackwood low D, but Nigel has stopped making them. His website says "We are no longer taking orders for these whistles. We have shared our design with a pipe maker in Galicia. A link to his site will be added soon." see http://www.garviebagpipes.co.uk...

Yes, it's an Indian bamboo whistle.
I remember these from my hippy years in Edinburgh. Finbar Furey used to play one of these in Sandy Bell's bar around that time.

Re: More "divided by a common language" stuff

Here in Scotland I've been hearing "I dinnae want ti pish on yir chips" for a couple of years now. (Translation: I don't want to pee on your French fries.) Just the same as raining on the parade, I guess, though a little more robust.

Re: Why is the Bb called the Goldilocks?

Low whistles first appeared in the early-mid 70s. I still have a couple of Overtons I bought in 1973-4.

I've never heard the term Goldilocks before. Nor did I know Generations went down to G: I have no recollection of ever seeing them.

Happy Sun Return!

Re: Best maintained inexpensive whistle standards?

I have some Generations I've had for 45 years: the C and Bb are holding up well, but I also have one 40-year-old D that's still a good player. I've worn the nickel off round its finger holes, too. I also have a couple of original Overton low As from the early '70s, which I still play, and a low G fr...

Re: Lindsay System Chanter

I have a version 2.0 chanter. I had terrible difficulties at first, and put it away in a drawer, but some months later Donald came to my place with a new reed, and since then it plays like a dream, with a full rich tone in the low f-d range. The reed is also very stable and never needs adjusting. Th...

Garvie Smallpipe chanter FS

Hi I have a blackwood Garvie smallpipes chanter in A, with an extra high b key, in perfect working order, about 3-4 years old. (I played it at the LBPS social on Sunday.) I'd like to ask £250 ono, inc. p&p within Europe. (Contact me about costs elsewhere.) Nigel has closed Garvie's order book fo...
