Re: Clarke Original D Tweak/Mods
Clarinerd- truly, practice practice practice. I started out about a month ago on two soprano D whistles, and hitting those high notes were about killing me-shrill, piercing, and set the dog to barking. But now, after more practice, I find I hit those notes more surely, with confidence; they are far ...

Re: Symbol on fingering chart?
MzMolly, I am so glad you posted this question! I had wondered about that symbol as well- but since I've mostly been playing from sheet music, I hadn't gotten curious enough to ask...

Re: A good sheet music source for whistles?
ytliek- I thank you for the youtube link! That player shows a screen shot of her tablature at the end of the video- which I'm putting in music form. And, I saw how she slid her finger off the tone hole- I'm practicing that right now!
Thanks again!![thumbs up ](./images/smilies/icon_thumb_buis.gif)

Re: Which instrument do I buy?
I would be firmly in the learn to play on the one type of whistle first camp. If you keep running to the other whistle each time you run into a difficulty you are avoiding the problem. It's better to conquer the hurdle and move on to the next: progress. Yes, I have to agree with you here; but, havi...

Re: Which instrument do I buy?
I am a newbie, and was given some advice that proved useful. It was recommended that I get two different styles of whistles; that way, if I'm having trouble hitting a particular note, I can try it on the other whistle. I have been playing a Susato Kildare and a Freeman-tweaked Clarke Sweetone, both ...

Re: A good sheet music source for whistles?
Thanks everyone! I did list some specific music I was looking for, but I did say I was interested in other songs, too- so any music link is appreciated! I have been bookmarking like mad- keep 'em coming!!! Any and all sheet music links appreciated! Chas- that trillian link, I'm having trouble gettin...

A good sheet music source for whistles?
I have been trying to find a good source for printable sheet music for my whistles in D. Can anyone share their sources? I'm hoping for free, but wouldn't mind paying for some, as well. I am, of course, looking for music from Hobbit and LOTR, Hedwig's Theme from Harry Potter, and music from Titanic,...

Re: Newbie with low D whistle/flute questions...
Thanks again, Richard! I am going to keep track of this thread; those measurements on the spread of the holes will be very helpful. I have ordered a Becker whistle, so when I start learning the piper's grip, I will have some measurements to compare to- both in bore size, and tone hole placement. It'...

Re: Dixon low D whistle with flute head- got one? Need info!
Feadoggie- I'm glad you mentioned ordering from Doug Tipple- I am definitely interested in his flutes. It looks like, on his website, that you can't order a flute that he doesn't already have in stock, so I'm glad that's just a misunderstanding. I haven't found the 'place an order' link yet. I am lo...

Re: Dixon low D whistle with flute head- got one? Need info!
Thank you all for the information! You've confirmed what I suspected- that, if I'm interested in playing both whistle and flute, I would be better off buying separate instruments. Doug Tipple's site was interesting, but he hasn't got much available right now- anyone else make that type of flute? The...

Dixon low D whistle with flute head- got one? Need info!
Hi there! I am a newbie to the Irish whistle, and am looking at getting a Dixon low D whistle. I see that a few come in a combo with a flute head, also- does anyone have one of these? I would like to know how they sound, if you use the flute head much, or is it just a gimmick? I am interested in lea...

Re: Newbie with low D whistle/flute questions...
Pancelticpiper- thanks for all the info! That will definitely help, when picking an instrument. I did order a Becker, so I can give the piper's grip a try. One thing I wonder about- everyone talks about reaching those bottom 3 holes; why don't the whistle makers tell us exactly how far apart those a...

Re: Newbie with low D whistle/flute questions...
Oh, yay- answers!! I'm so glad to see this is an active community! I don't have any music shops where I can try any whistles, so I was hoping to get some good feedback here. Megapop- yes, I did play the flute- but had to quit, when braces changed my embouchure dramatically... curse the orthodontist ...

Newbie with low D whistle/flute questions...
I am new to whistles, and have been practicing on two soprano D whistles (Freeman tweaked Clarke Sweetone, and a Susato Kildare). I want to learn the low D, but saw in several different places recommendations that I start with a soprano D first. I am glad I did; I could afford to buy two different s...
