Re: Anyone like the big round embouchure?

This is reminding me of a Glenn Schultz made headjoint that was passed back and forth between two excellent players here in Chicago many years back. I don't know where it actually resides and haven't seen it for years. But it was visually a circle within an ivory insert. It was before the Ivory ban ...

Re: Stuck

I've not checked into the forum for a while and found reading this saga quite interesting. Some of the advice was sound, some slightly frightening and then the conversation drifted to tightening. I too am wondering: Elsbeth, whatever did you do? And how well did it work? Many of us have found our wh...

Re: Benefits of HEAVY/heavy wall whistles?

Comparing high D's my favorite whistle is a brass Copeland which is an exquisitely heavy whistle. On other days it is my Sindt, which is much lighter. But if I were forced to choose to have only one whistle it would be the Copeland. I also enjoy my original Glenn Schultz Water Weasel which is light ...

pipe playerFriends Ross's wedding

There was a bouzouki sighting reported on a FB page. Folks recognized the instrument, but no one named the musician. There was also a piper and a whistle player. This was the hay day of the post Riverdance ITM in US TV. This episode aired in 1998. Anyone know who played in this trio?

Re: Best flute for small hands?

An 8 year old can start with a silver flute with a curved headjoint. The fingering is slightly different if she wants to play on a simple system later. But it is not a difficult switch. You can find a regular band teacher to give her the basics in tone production if you can't find a trad player than...

Re: Pounding Sand

This reminds me of a passive solar heat retention method that folks were trying to popularize in the 60's and early 70s. You'd place a large number of plastic milk jugs filled with sand in front of a wall of windows in an effort to store the heat. This was in the "make solar panels using old be...

Re: Does anyone recognize this vintage whistle?

If this is an antique it might be good to check for lead solder. You can pick up kits at a hardware store that have little swabs that turn color if there is lead.

Re: Silver ring

A teacher of mine lost a ring from the bottom of his Olwell. He was going to send it back "one of these days" to get a new one. I happened to be wearing a silicone wedding ring in those days. Since I bought them in packs of three and no real emotional connection to them I gave it to him. I...

Re: Playing with a friend , her music in many keys, buy different keyed whistles?

While everyone's advice to learn a bit of theory is well enough, I've known a number of whistle players who carry a bag of whistles for the reason you describe or to accompany a singer's vocal range. You could start by choosing the key your friend most favors when adventuring from ITM and pick up a ...

The Flute History Channel on Facebook is a lovely page. It is run by and frequented by some very familiar faces to the Chiff and Fipple community. I've been following it for years now. It is a deep dive into flute nerd-dom that might not suit everyone. But if you enjoy that sort of thing it can be l...

Re: Flute crutch?

I seem to remember Jem hosting some discussion regarding these. They were used for the simple system flute's orchestra days. But not by many. There is something called a flute cushion that is a silicone pad that sticks on to a modern flute. I am not sure if they would give you any relief. They are f...

Re: Left wrist

I am curious how it is going for you. As I was reading through the thread I was glad to see you were going to consult with an OT. PTs are great, but as mentioned in a previous post, OT's focus of expertise is best to help you crack this particular nut. If you found your particular OT was not that he...

Re: Paul Roche -style

I really do love this style of playing. It is rich in tone and melody. I know many are more attracted to the harder edged "burrrr" with some players, or the ornamental octave jumps. But this straightforward wealth of musicality is my personal favorite. It is difficult to put into words. I ...

Re: Question for those with Morvan Flutes

If you follow the instructions in Jem's video you should be good. As for weak embouchures, for decades I used to play every day for hours. When Covid hit and sessions ended I slowed way down on my flute and started messing about with my fiddle and a little bit of whistle, etc. I have been encouragin...

Re: Tips for a solid low D on Lesouëf flute.

It looks like you've gotten this one taken care of. But I am tempted to ask if this is a keyed or keyless flute. A faulty seal on the Eb key can leave you with a wimpy D, likewise a leaky joint on a two piece body... The question, "Is it me or the flute?" isn't an insult to a maker. Things...
