Re: Cleaning and Maintaining Aluminum Whistle

I'd ask the maker. There was something called Naval Jelly available at hardware stores, that I used to use for oxidation on aluminum screen doors years ago. I have no idea what it would do to a whistle, but the maker of the instrument may have a better idea.

Re: repairing ?

Years ago I had a Rudall Carte repaired by Terry McGee. At that time, with that flute, he said to leave the head crack alone since it was in the back of the lined head joint. (Someone had put wax in there I think, or he may have. I can't remember). He said that if the crack didn't bother me it would...

Re: repairing antique embrouchure

Thanks for the repair person suggestion and the spell check. I am sometimes creative with my spelling. As a recovering dyslexic I occasionally have adventures with letters. In college I wrote a whole paper on a psychologist named Alder, before my prof corrected me (Adler, oops). Though I am most lik...

repairing antique embrouchure

I have an antique, possibly cocus flute that had a half done repair when I got it. There was a crack through the embrouchure which was built up with epoxy. It now needs to be reshaped. I sort of thought I'd get around to it someday but am a bit shy to experiment. I am thinking of keeping the same ho...

Re: Slides on flute

They are very different moves actually. In the fingers they may seem the same but the forearm and the wrist are in a different position in relationship to each other. To illustrate this for yourself mimic playing the slide on a whistle and a flute without the instruments in your hand. The slide on t...

oiling antique unused flute

I have a couple of antique flutes I am going to pull out of the closet. Would you recommend oiling them with Dr.s bore oil? They vary in quality and condition. I started playing one this week for ten minutes at a time just to break it in again. I don't know if this is necessary but better safe than ...

Re: removing that musty smell

While I was looking for Doctor's bore oil I noticed they had a wood cleaning product. I have no idea if that would work for you, but it is out there.

Re: removing that musty smell

The scent free febreeze is a new re-issue. It disappeared a number of years but has just reappeared on grocery shelves in Chicago. It might find its way to you. We have a couple of good hardware stores around here that stock it too. I have no idea how effective it would be on a flute though.

Re: Old Flutes, Cold Weather & Outside Playing

I found wrapping my flute in one of those "keeps things cold/hot" bags you can get at the grocery (for helping groceries to maintain their temperature on the way home) is helpful. They come various sizes with a plastic snap handle. If you cut off the handle you could probably just use it a...

Re: How many C&Fers on Patrick Olwell's list?

I got on his list for a keyed flute when my eldest was just out of diapers. He is graduating High School now. I called him 4 or 5 years back and he confirmed I was still on there, but I have my doubts. Jean

the piccolo is a tricky instrument and most of us haven't mastered it. A scarey idea is someone who's played piccolo for a couple of months shrilling away at a session. If it were to be truely mastered like John Doonan referred to in another email it could make sense. Most of us don't have they year...

everybody I have ever asked has confessed to playing in the bathroom or shower. the hard surface of the tiles helps us to sound more brilliant than we really are. which is lots and lots of fun.

I've played both and a few more. It will depend as much on your embrouchure as on the embrouchure of the flute. the tighter your embrouchre (the smaller the openng between your lips) and pushing from your diaphram with an open throat-- throat feeling open as if you were yawning-- keeping your cheeks...
