Re: Captain Picard's Ressikan whistle

The composer of the tune is Jay Chattaway, who wrote music for four of the Star Trek series and many movies. He owns a gorgeous sailboat named Cadenza. It’s at my marina in México. I walked by it the first day I was here and knew it had to belong to a musician. The tune is probably the best known pi...

Re: C natural on a keyless Solen Leseouf flute

I have two of her flutes, a keyless Eb and a six keyed D. The C natural on the D sounds well, as does the keyed note. The equivalent on the Eb is in tune and clear. Both are excellent flutes, but the Eb is wonderfully sweet. Communicate with Solen about your needs. You might also consider a C natura...

Re: Earplugs for Concerts Needed Badly

I’m another happy EarPeace user. My youngest is an Aspergers kid and I got a set for him as he’s easily overstimulated. I and about four other family members wound up getting them. They are also great for reducing the background noise on airplanes, and are quite comfortable. I like the adjustable fi...

Re: Oz whistles

I wish I could share my experience with Oz whistles, but I’ve been waiting on an order for over a year now. Mitch Smith, by all accounts a good guy, has been going through some unspecified issues over the last year and is apparently transitioning the business over to his son. I wish them well and ho...

Re: Any contacts recently with Oz Whisles?

Kevin,
I was there at the later stages of the fire and it felt like being on the edge of a war zone. Slow but sure recovery, but I imagine it's as crazy as everywhere else now. I spend most of my time on a boat on Mexico these days, so I don't have much current knowledge.

Re: Any contacts recently with Oz Whisles?

Thank you. I missed the web update, and my last email was about that time. I have a prepaid order from last April, and no response to polite status requests since last August. I feared there might have been some health issues, and that sounds like it may be the case. From all I have heard, he's a lo...

Any contacts recently with Oz Whisles?

Has anyone heard from Mitch Smith recently? I've been trying to contact him about an order and am getting no response to emails. Hoping the fires and the pandemic haven't been a problem. Thanks.

Re: Earplugs for Concerts Needed Badly

I've been using silicone plugs from EarPeace for a couple of years and been happy. They have three levels of filters you can insert to increase sound blockage. They are $25-30 a pair at Amazon and come in an aluminum keychain cannister with one spare plug.

Re: The Next Great Flute Maker?

This has been a fascinating discussion on materials for those of who simply play flute with no maker's aspirations. It seems to me that CITES regulations have had an impact on the use of ABW. The last flutes I purchased from overseas were mopane, which seems like a good option and allowed me to bypa...

Re: Small Hands-Is Casey Burns the only solution?

Doug Tipple has posted some measurements of several different flutes on his website site, including hole size and distance between holes. http://tippleflutes.com/flute-finger-hole-comparison/ That said, hole size seems a factor, as well. You will struggle less to cover smaller holes than large ones....

Re: A Smaller Rod To Swab Out The Flute

I bought a smaller cleaning stick at a music store that I think was meant for a recorder. It's just like the usual flute stick, but about 60% scale. Works great for my Eb flute.

Re: Somers Pratten, Delrin, D Flute/ w 8 Maruice Reviol Keys

I just wanted to add my voice in support of Maurice's work. He added six keys to my Doyle flute, as Martin Doyle suggested. It was a marvelous job, and its been my main flute for about three years. John Skelton told me that the keys were "French style," which I think may partly be a refere...

If I weren't expecting my Solen Lesouef 6 key next month...it was a tossup between her and Watson when I made the order. Someone will get a lovely flute.

Re: Right-hand fingers

I have struggled with similar issues on the mandolin. There are standard “classical” methods, but the best players vary tremendously in both right and left hand technique. That seems to be the case with ITM flute players, as well. I start looking for efficiency in technique as a guide. One of the be...
