Re: New lever harp maker
Looks like nice work Dave. Congratulations.
Would you by chance know of a maker in the Birmingham area by the name of Charles Ellis? I recently acquired a harp with this name (from Birmingham).

Re: Got My First Harp

Dear William is a gracious man and would no doubt respond to inquiries. Ya fingernails. I've kept them (R hnd) since as a young ...

Re: Got My First Harp
Yes the Scottish harp - the old stuff is my passion. https://youtu.be/Cuca8XBBTAs
I nearly (but a hairsbreadth away) bought a harp from MacDonald too, one year ago. The only thing that stopped me was purchase of a hardingfele instead...now taking all my time from harping

Re: Got My First Harp
Congratulations on your harp! (I had a 22-str stoney end for a while).
I too was first captivated upon hearing Patrick Ball (30 yrs ago) - so much so that I'm still playing wire harp. It's an unshakable habit.

Re: Where do people go to talk strings?
Well, people come and go. I started the fiddle group on mandolin cafe years ago - and I don't think it's been used since 2016.benhall.1 wrote:> people...who used to post there, don't any more.
I find discussion has waned on all the sites - or, I'm simply not as interested in what's being discussed.

Re: Where do people go to talk strings?
cat- Do you know about the Virtual Harp Circle and/or Wire Harp lists on yahoo? Those--along with the Celtic Harp group on Facebook-- are where I go to talk harps. Several clarsach players contribute, and all 3 groups are friendly (a lovely change after I was in a couple other forums that were... w...

But there's nowhere nice - that I can find - to talk about the use of stringed instruments, especially fiddle, in ITM. You'd think there would be.

Re: Mystical and Contemplative
This opens the rabbit hole to Early Music in general. . . My interests are increasingly in this realm - since my instrument and its repertoire derive whence. Concurrently, I began taking more interest in archaicisms like harpsichord, modal choral works, and various forms increasingly remote from mo...

Re: Mystical and Contemplative
I was captivated by the sound of wire harp since the first time I heard it (over the radio). It was a sound I carried with me over a decade and more, before I had the opportunity to acquire one and set about studying. I was playing harp repertoire (Carolan) on guitar and hammered dulcimer to approxi...
