Re: What should I do and where should I start?

Sorry, I haven't got that far yet to updating profile. I'm in the UK, London area. So, it's a bit of a swim! What a great experience! I'm sure, to get hands on lessons with her. The cruise isn't something I'd go on either, but does sound intriguing. I wonder if she will ever do any tutorial sort of ...

Re: What should I do and where should I start?

The best thing to do is go hear Joanie Madden live somewhere and hear the whistles she plays. Or better still, take one of her classes or workshops. You can learn a lot. She is a very good teacher and she has some great tunes (and stories) to share. Feadoggie[/quote] Are these online or in the Stat...

Re: What should I do and where should I start?

E flat... I really thought that was a D. I need to get used to differentiating between all the sizes. Thanks!

Re: What should I do and where should I start?

Oh yes, I see from the Burke website she favours the aluminium D. There's a sound file on there that I'm guessing hasn't been compressed as much as the YouTube clip of Joanie Madden. Nice sound. Definitely something to remember in future, and now I understand the warning I received near the start of...

Re: What should I do and where should I start?

I'm glad there's chat here about good high D's because now I can throw this question out there: anyone know which make of whistle Joanie Madden plays in this clip? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iAyENIYI328 That is some exquisite sound, aside from the marvellous playing. I've been googling to find o...

Re: What should I do and where should I start?

Ok, thanks a lot! Will follow that link in a minute. I take it then that most people keep their whistle in the hard plastic container it arrived in? I have recently bought Mary Bergin's 'Feadóga Stáin' which I'm enjoying, and will look out now for the other you mentioned. I'm interested in both low ...

Re: What should I do and where should I start?

Thanks. Who are some favourite players of people in here? I find lists on the Internet of famous Irish tin whistle players but without going through every single one (I intend to at some stage) it would be really useful to know some of the best loved. Both the A and low F Cheiftain whistles arrived ...

Re: What should I do and where should I start?

I hadn't thought to check against a tuner, I was just hearing what I hear, but I'll keep a close check on airflow, thanks.

Re: What should I do and where should I start?

Ahhh, so that is why I see videos of whistle players ('whistlers'?! Is there a collective name?) blowing down the whistle before playing, to warm it up? The Dixon is the metal one (alloy). It is the A and the B that sound flat, especially the B. I notice if I cover the first hole three quarters of t...

Re: What should I do and where should I start?

Right, so here is the update. I did go with the swap, and also bought myself a Dixon high D. Many thanks to all of you, I'm really liking this forum, there seems to be a real wealth of knowledge on these boards for which a beginner like me is extremely grateful! I spent last night watching a fascina...

Re: What should I do and where should I start?

Unfortunately, there's no one local that I know of, and I don't know anyone who plays the whistle. It's just that I enjoy hearing it so much, on albums or the Internet. That's good to know about the A whistle. Maybe I will just go for the straight swap A and F. Then again that Goldie/Overton F has a...

Re: What should I do and where should I start?

Thanks for the tips. I have measured the Kerry pro low D and that fifth hole really is pretty large considering some of the measurements that were mentioned. The measurements are thus: Whole length: 59cm Distance from centre to centre of fifth to sixth hole: 42mm Fifth hole diameter: 14mm (!) Well t...

Re: What should I do and where should I start?

Oh, and I should add that I do love the sound of the low F whistle, it's just that my reservations are on whether it will again be too big for me and whether I'll be able to find material to learn on it. If anyone has experience with this I'd welcome thoughts. Also, I notice nothing's been said abou...
