Around 45 minutes.

Re: 3D printed whistle head with PVC pipe.

If you already own a 3D printer, it would take about 20c worth of filament to print this piece, perhaps less. If you were to hire someone else to print it, or upload it to Shapeways.com and order it there, then the largest element of the price would be the shipping. Could be anywhere from $5 to $20 ...

Re: Quote for the day...

A man walks into a bar in Belfast carrying a large bag.
The whole bar goes quiet and the barman asks him "What's in the bag?"
"Five kilos of plastic explosives".
"Oh thank goodness, I thought it might be a bodhran".

Re: Flute Embouchure

When making my own PVC flutes I used a few resources... The Flutomat javascript calculator: http://11wall-west.com/~ph_kosel/flutomat.html This guide to making whistles was also useful: http://www.ggwhistles.com/howto/ And I carefully measured a Doug Tipple D flute. http://i.imgur.com/PtvYuvH.jpg Th...

Re: LefreQue - what the heck?

But my problem with this test is that it isn't "double-blind". You're absolutely right, the correct way to do this experiment is to have a machine blow the flute automatically, so there's no player influence. Then record it with and without the device. However I'm not spending hundreds of...

Re: LefreQue - what the heck?

I found a YouTube video with a flute using this device. Have a listen to this: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/7806926/lefreq_test.mp3 One of these takes has no LefreQue device on the flute. One has 1 on the head joint, and one has 2 on the head joint (one either side of the embouchure). I've cl...

Re: LefreQue - what the heck?

Perhaps someone who owns one could post an audio clip of the flute with it on and off (but don't tell us which is which). Then we could all decide which sounds better without any placebo influence.

Pat (Plunk111) - have you got the facilities to record a short demo and post it here?

Something a bit different: https://soundcloud.com/monorail-1/ice-caves-theme-short

Flute and piano played over an electronic/synth background. Played on a Tipple-D flute. This is part of a soundtrack for a game I'm working on.

Visiting San Francisco - any music store recommendations?

I'm visiting San Francisco for one week, and while I'm not on the look out for a new flute it might be nice to try some. Are there any music stores that sell Irish flutes around the city?

Cocuswood Boehm flute found in a local shop, is it any good?

I saw this in the window of a music shop: http://i.imgur.com/41Oue66.jpg I don't play Boehm flutes, only keyless irish so far, but this looks fascinating and quite cheap ($325 Australian is about $237 US). Is this any good? The label says open G# which I believe is an unusual fingering setup for the...

Re: Blowing an M&E polymer keyless flute left-handed?

I agree, I found the Tipple really strong with a particularly rich low-D. However I found the M&E much easier to play in the second octave. For a long time I thought I had a bad embouchure as I couldn't play high tunes on the Tipple without them sounding very whistley or loud, but once I got the...

Re: Blowing an M&E polymer keyless flute left-handed?

I have an M&E polymer and to my eye both sides of the embouchure seem to be undercut the same amount. Playing it on the other side seems to sound the same also. It's a very good flute, I'd recommend it. By the way if you're struggling to reach the holes at the bottom, look up the piper's grip. I...

Re: Interesting article on pending Ivory sale legislation

The importation and sale of new and/or undocumented Ivory has been banned in the U.S. Since 1990. Are you saying all antique Ivory should be banned? Flutes? Pianos? Billiard balls? Art Objects of every sort from any time period? Yes I believe so. Since it's simple to fake 'documentation' for old iv...
