Re: Bass drone "puck" resonators

Early Pucks were not Resonators. They were just solid disks with an IN and an OUT. I assume the 'Resonator' was a developement that arrived with the Taylor or 'wide bore' pipes around the turn of the 1900's. The idea must have been to get more noise out of the Bass drone , a noise I do not care for!

Re: In Full Tune

Re: In Full Tune

I've ordered my copy. 8 tracks on the C set from Padraic... wow! I thought the set would come in third place.

I'll get Mrs. W. to wrap it and put it under the Christmas tree....... :D

Re: Regulator Key Shape

If we are to ascribe certain makers to common key profiles then the Tear Drop is perhaps best described as Egan shape even though more prolific examples exist by later makers, notably the Rowsomes.

I'm happy when I have one good reed.

Yes, me too!!!! If that GOOD reed is in the chanter then everything else can be encouraged to work with it.

Re: Why do regulator pins move?

Yes indeed FG, you have a good point there. Once everything is nicely in tune at 'room temperature' the amount of in/out movement needed to correct any small faults is minimal and should not result in a local correction blob ending up on the wrong side of a tone hole. Originally the pins were used t...

Re: Why do regulator pins move?

When a set of pipes is ' cold', when you begin to play, the chanter will be a little low in pitch. As the set warms up the pitch will rise a little but the chanter reed will rise in pitch a little more than the regulator reeds because it is constantly in use. By drawing out the 'tuning pins' the reg...

Re: Michael Falsey - RIP

Sad news.

We used to enjoy visits from Michael when he would ask me to repair something on his pipes and proceed to tell us lots of stories. He was very entertaining and a fine musician too.

Re: Bellows Metal Hinge

The metal hinges shown in the articles cited on this thread all have very short bearing surfaces. I make a hinge, all turned on the lathe, with two bearing surfaces of 15mm long x 6.25mm diameter. These hinges fit between the bellows boards in a similar way to the Taylor type. One very heavily used ...

Re: Found a new old set of pipes (Coyne)---who restores/ makes reed for them

The 390mm chanter suggests a C# set. Best to check this against the length of the Baritone Regulator, which should be slightly longer than the chanter by 10 to 12mm. The mounts on the chanter look to me like bone, perhaps horse ? I recall Standeven talking to me about a Coyne set he had bought from ...

Re: Back to Bottom D Quickly Without Squeaking

Yes, that is what I do but , with the caveat that I play a Flat Set where the note holes of the chanter are a lot smaller than a Concert chanter. I am not sure if you would need the two holes open on a modern D chanter. With the small note holes perhaps there is not enough of a sudden change of regi...
