Re: McCallum getting into uilleann making

Solid looking set of pipes, I think I may look into them, considering the fast ordering time. I don't have much patience these-days :poke:

Re: truckleehowe

I believe the music, the stories, it’s all part of the whole. For sure this is the situation in my native West Virginia. We have an annual event called the Vandalia Gathering that has contests in various categories including fiddling, dancing, storytelling, and baking. The highlight of the event is...

Re: truckleehowe

Well, of course there is 'Féidhm Tonn Ri's Castle' , perhaps only available on Vinyl ( Claddagh CC19) but a whole LP with the one long story and tunes in between who's titles are suggested by the story. I never hear people talk of this Seamus Ennis recording from 1977, perhaps it is not so signific...

Re: truckleehowe

Incidentally, Colin Harper, co-author of the "Wheels of the World" book, uploaded a recording of the Ash Grove performance to Youtube earlier this year: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5g8MPawKz4 That’s the source where I quoted from, regarding the audience and Ennis. Very neat stuff. Fu...

Re: truckleehowe

The owner of the Ash Grove had reckoned an unaccompanied Séamus might be too much for his audience, and asked Country Al to help out. I have a similar tape of him doing a gig in New York around that time. Not sure it had much to do with intensity, more with the pipes not working very well and tryin...

Re: truckleehowe

I also recall him using a term "Sylvan Tunnel" A road overarched by trees, I'd think. 'Sylvan' is not that obscure. But it is not strange to see him used florid language if you realise he had some literary aspirations, as a translator (from Irish) of poetry and prose. Breathnach mentions ...

Re: truckleehowe

That's the second track on "Forty Years of Irish Piping." Seamus Ennis was a very entertaining storyteller. Some of the terms he uses here are rather obscure, though. An academic article by Lynnsey K. Weissenberger (who is also a fiddler and harpist) describes "truckly-how" as &...

This is possibly the thinnest a chanter can be. Made by Johnny Doran I wonder what it sounded like .
