Re: OK, now I've seen everything
In that video (one post above here), what's going on in that long extended section of tube to the left of the player's mouth? Does air space continue up inside it or is it just a counterweight? The dizi does have a considerable stretch of extra material above the embouchure hole, and there is no cr...

Re: OK, now I've seen everything
If you do a search for Zac Zinger on YouTube you will find a wide range of videos showcasing his insane musical gifts. Zac has been play-testing flutes for me for the last five years or so (he also plays dizi, silver flute, saxaphone and heaven knows what else), and he collaborates with many equally...

Re: Wood vs metal rings at flute joints
Based on other threads I’ve read on this site, it seems that it isn’t uncommon for a wood flute to shrink and a silver ring to then fall off, requiring a bit of cloth to be added under the ring to make it tight again. I wonder what happens when this shrinkage happens under carbon fiber… carbon fibe...

Re: Wood vs metal rings at flute joints
Heh heh, I remember years back coming to a conclusion like that. At that time I was measuring out the desired length of the section of the wire, marking it, sawing it off by hand, dressing the ends with a file and then sandpaper, bending it into a ring, soldering it, filing out any excess on the in...

Re: Wood vs metal rings at flute joints
I've taken to doing wooden bore rings instead of metal, and I use carbon fiber tape and epoxy underneath the ring. I got the suggestion from paddler, and it works really well, though it's a trifle messy to deploy. Wooden rings give a lot of decorative range with less trouble than forging metal rings...

Re: Short review of the Galeon Firth Pond & Co. delrin flute
I like a matte finish with Delrin, myself. In the past when I've used it, I've also rubbed it with fine steel wool, going "with the grain" to give it more of a wooden appearance as well as making it less slippery.

Re: Short review of the Galeon Firth Pond & Co. delrin flute
Nice thanks! I made a big q-tip out of 0000 steel wool and a shishkabob skewer and twisting it on those bevels by hand for a minute or so smoothed them over perfectly, it looks totally professional now!!! No regrets, this flute is fabulously comfortable and good looking now!! And i have no way of m...

Re: Short review of the Galeon Firth Pond & Co. delrin flute
A fairly safe way to bevel the edge of a finger hole in a non-destructive way is to take some fine steel wool (000 or 0000), wrap it around a thin cylinder and gently rub the edges. When I do this I actually wrap the steel wool around a piece of 1/8" stock that fits in a dremel tool. You can wr...

Re: Wooden Boehm flutes
I've been seeing ads for Chinese-made wooden Boehm flutes for prices around $800-$1000. It makes you wonder, if they can make metal Boehm flutes and sell them for $300, why does a wooden Boehm flute have to cost $15,000? However, I've also seen people saying that what is being advertised as Yamaha ...

Re: Is Bawu Flute Hard to Learn to Play?
Funny anecdote Geoffrey :) Is the bawu still 'broken'? There are 2 plugs inside it: the headjoint cork and also a cork at the footjoint. This controls the sounding length and the sound pressure for the reed to activate, otherwise it needs the valve reed replaced. They are simple instruments with no...

Re: Making wooden whistles - a few questions
Thanks Paddler for emphasising the point on resting the wood at different points in the process. I've taken that on board. Of course there's always Delrin or Ebonite! Or resin stabilised wood if one can find it big enough (for most of us who don't produce it like you!). And of course if an instrume...

Re: Making wooden whistles - a few questions
I’ll offer a slightly different perspective with regards to reaming (or not) for wooden whistle making and say, “it depends”. A good gun drill, properly used, CAN yield a very straight, smooth bore. OTH, there are a few ways things can go sideways, so to speak, leaving you with less than optimal re...

Re: Making wooden whistles - a few questions
Another quick question if that's ok. I'm specifically thinking about whistles here but is the drilling of the bore sufficient or is there a more refined reaming process after that. I can see that there is with flutes from Terry's comments but I was wondering about this re whistles? Do you make the ...

Re: Wooden Boehm flutes
She's not that interested in learning to play on a new embouchure hole - plus, I'm skeptical of those wooden heads for Boehm flutes; I don't think they have taper in the head, do they? A non tapered head on a cylindrical instrument strikes me as a bad idea. Yes, they do have a taper in the head. At...
