I’m selling a brass Thornton soprano D whistle for $120 OBO within CONUS.
It is an earlier cylindrical one. Plays and sounds quite nicely. Feel free to PM me if you’d like further info.

FS: Thornton brass D SOLD
Ahoy I have for sale a very nice Thornton D whistle, made by Tommy Martin. $120 OBO. I don’t remember what I paid for it, as it was bought a number of years back. I think it was somewhere around this ballpark. I hate to see it not getting much use, but I simply have too many soprano D whistles and t...

Re: Killarney whistle engraving
I have a couple of the very early ones. They are not engraved.
But I don’t think you got a knock-off. They engrave them now.
We wouldn’t want to get a knock-off of a knock-off.

Re: New whistle key or maker?
It depends. Do you have whistles you are extremely fond of from a particular maker? If so, it might be worth getting another whistle from that maker in a different key. Do you want to try whistles from a new maker? If so, then do that. You know what you would want more than anyone else would. As for...

Re: The Wonders of Cheap Whistles
I feel the same way about Acorn and Oak whistles, which are of the same type and price range (actually cheaper, I believe). I love them and have them scattered all over my house and vehicle. :D A good thing about Oak whistles is that they do not glue the head, so you can tune them right out of the b...

Re: First time flute buyer
Although the post is old, I would second the recommendation to go for one of Francois Baubet’s flutes, in case anyone in the same situation comes across this post in the future. They are good flutes for any price range. They sound and play fantastically to my tastes, and they are capable of putting ...

Re: What are the first couple of Tunes you play to start off your practicing?
It’s always different for me. I play whatever tune I feel like playing. Sometimes it is something I recently learned, and sometimes it is just some random tune that is in my head. However, there are some tunes I have a tendency to play more often as soon as I pick up my flute. One of my favorite thi...

Re: Collection by maker
A bit of both. With some makers, such as John Sindt, I like their whistles a lot in every key in which they are available, so for those makers I buy them in every key (sometimes even multiples in each key). The same is true for old Generations. I tend to acquire a lot in every key, because I like ho...

Re: How to remove head on new Generation whistle
A combination of the heating method along with dropping it down another tube will usually work, and if you’re lucky it won’t crack. Just a side note- Oak C whistles have the head removable right out of the box, and are usually better than most recent Gens. I’m baffled as to why Generation glues the ...

Re: What's the difference between a 6 or a 4 keys Irish flute?
Depends which key is added. Technically most flutes without keys /can/ play chromatically, with Eb being the only note that is sometimes very difficult to sound properly. My primary flute right now is keyless, and Eb is the only note that gives me trouble, as C and Bb are easy to cross finger and ge...

Re: Practicing/playing with different makers
For me it is a bit of both. I have a main high D from Timothy Potter that gets played multiple times per day. That’s my go-to whistle, as it checks all of my boxes and I think it sounds and plays the best to my tastes. On Monday-Friday I play my car whistle during my lunch breaks, which is an except...

Re: Whistle and flute
I play both. I expect most Irish flute players were whistlers first, with perhaps a minority coming directly to it from Böhm flute. Playing whistle will help immensely with knowing where the notes are and how to play tunes, as the fingering is the same. However, whistle will not help at all with get...

Re: Piccolo Question/Recommendation
The embouchure cut is round... I am not sure that an oval cut is possible given the size and physics of the instrument. You could ask Davy. He was very responsive to my questions. His website is http://www.fifeanddrumshop.com/ I have seen many antique piccolos with oval embouchures, more similar to...

Piccolo Question/Recommendation
Less than a month ago I ended up getting an unmarked, presumably 19th century, piccolo for an extremely low price. After plugging the holes for the keys that don’t work (I plan to have it repadded soon), I’ve been playing it daily and having a lot of fun. This has made me more interested in piccolos...
