Isn't it common among Irish flute players to attack the E "cutting into" it from a D, precisely to address this problem? I don't know what name a "cut from below" has as an ornament, but that is what I mean.

With only two positions on my Iberian three-hole flute (say o-o-o and o-o-x, right being the thumb) I can get a handful of notes. I don't see why a one-hole flute couldn't get close to a full pentatonic scale.

Lately my favourite for playing on both whistle and flute has been The Jewels of the Ocean.

The first recording that came to mind is the Cobblestone's The Thursday Sessions.

Yeah, something along the lines of "dull sin ay ah" ("ay" as in "hay", "ah" short) with a mild emphasis on the 4th syllable was what I had in my (Brit) mind's ear rather than an authentic Spanish pronunciation. Don't see what's tricky about it. Just that pret...

"Dulcinea" is probably a tricky one for English speakers though, in terms of pronunciation. In original Spanish that would be "dool-thee-'née-ah". I'm guessing in English it would become something like "duh" in the first syllable, and maybe rhyming with "nay" ...

IRT toolgirl: Nice! I've been tempted by his flutes for some time now. Which of the two models did you pick (Pratten-Rudall)? Unless it's something else. Since you said you tried some flutes over there, could you give us a few cents of the experience? It's always nice to get first-hand feedback like...
