Re: Help with the Belfast polka, please

Silly, indeed! I’m finding that a simple D>D ED|B>B cB is working much better than D/D/D/D/ ED | B/B/B/B/ cB to my ears and still sounds plenty like a polka. I will definitely take your advice Mr. G, and see if I can sneak a few other notes in there too. Perhaps there just isn’t much hope for this p...

Re: McCoy Tyner R.I.P.

I’ve always enjoyed his The Real McCoy record, and of course all of his work with ‘Trane.

Here’s to a life well lived.

Re: Help with the Belfast polka, please

Do you mean substitute the c part of the first setting for the a part of the second setting, transpose it, and keep the fourth bar of the second setting to avoid clashing? Yeah....I suppose that could work. A single ‘tuka’ would be half as irksome as a ‘tuka-tuka’, and it wouldn’t clash. Still, I ca...

Help with the Belfast polka, please

It’s a bit of a daggy tune, but it comes up. What are you going to do? Sometimes your pint glass isn’t empty and you don’t have to go to the bathroom. Plus, it comes after three perfectly good polkas. Anyhow, it’s the second setting here https://thesession.org/tunes/1959 specifically the A part wher...

If you’re going to go with a ribbon it’s hard to beat a Beyerdynamic M 160. They sound great on everything.

Re: 2020 Tin Whistle Enthusiasts Q & A

1. What did you accomplish on whistle in 2019? I suppose I got a little better and added a few tunes. 2. What are your whistle-related goals for 2020? I would like to play it more at the session (I am primarily a fiddler) maybe even start a few sets with it. Maybe, just maybe, this will be the year...

Re: Tin penny whistle

Anyone who doesn’t think that the whistle is fully panchromatic clearly hasn’t heard John Coltrane play it.

Terry McGee wrote: Interesting name, Rockstro. His real name was Rackstraw, but that wouldn't cut it in the high society in he wished to associate himself. Something a little more Italian was needed.
Huh, I had always assumed that he had picked up the name from his cameo appearance on The Flintstones...

Re: Anybody there with experience in Tony Dixon Alto-Whistle

Mine isn't like that. It has a brass body but that shouldn't make a difference. I have no trouble with the 2nd octave f and f#, though I've never had a call to play the 3rd octave g. Maybe you got a dud?

It was. It was the same look that he had the time he caught a snake and was carrying it around in his mouth. Big cats, little cats, they’re all the same animal when you get down to it.

Re: More Cat Stuff

That's the thing about whistles, isn't it: you never quite know. Did you ever play low whistles around Wilson? Yes, and also the flute. He would stare very intensely with a wild look in his eye. I used to joke with him about going after the ‘big game.’ I can’t even imagine what he would have made o...

Re: More Cat Stuff

I used to reside with a great ginger tom cat named Wilson who would mess with me every time I played a whistle. Sometimes he would come out of nowhere and knock the whistle out of my mouth. If I was missing a whistle he was probably laying on it. i might not see him for days, but as soon as I picked...
