Re: Whistle Instruction

I've been practicing with what I find on YouTube for the past 1.5 years or so. So far, I've found a lot available that is useful for both whistle and flute.

Re: Left-handed flute player question

I recently asked Mr. Copley about a refurbished flute that he has for sale on his site if it could be modified for a lefty. He replied that no, it would require enlarging the embouchure hole, and that would make it difficult to play.

Re: Benefits of HEAVY/heavy wall whistles?

Busterbill, I have the brass Burke high D, as well as the aluminum version of the same model. I tend to reach for the brass model more often, although as you had stated, there's nothing wrong with the aluminum one at all. The brass one has a slightly mellower voice than the aluminum one, although th...

Re: Left-handed flute player question

In answer to the first part of your post: Hammy on his blog speaks about trying to mirror his embouchure for lefties. The older generation saw lefties with some effort adapting to R&R and other older flutes to good effect. Tansey is notable here. As a 'natural lefty' I have had to live my life ...

Re: Left-handed flute player question

Thanks for your detailed reply, Paddler! It looks like buying a nice used right-handed flute and configuring it for a lefty might or might not be a good idea, depending on the flute in question. Good to know, anyway. Much appreciated. :)

Left-handed flute player question

I have a couple of nice keyless flutes. One is a Casey Burns blackwood Folk Flute, and the other is a delrin Copley, both in the key of D. Both are great flutes for me. Being a left-handed player, I requested the embouchure hole be cut for a lefty. My question is can a regular right-handed flute's e...

Re: Easiest 2nd Octave Whistle

Don't know if they are the absolute easiest D whistle to reach and play the second octave, but of my own whistles that I find that do that easier than the rest, and also are easily available, are my recent production Kilarney D, Freeman Blackbird, and O Briain Improved Tin Whistle. I don't know the ...

Re: The search for "the holy whistle grale".

In support of Mr Gumby’s point whenever I have purchased a new whistle - and there has been a few - after an initial play I have generally put the whistles aside with a bit of disappointment that they had not played like I had expected and hoped. After time I have given the whistle(s) another try a...

Re: A sad Lir whistle story

Update from my last post: I did just play the Lir D whistle a bit, and it seemed more forgiving on the lower notes with regard to finicky octave jumping. I noticed this before with whistles, and have seen that mentioned here as well. It is best not to be too quick in judging a new(ish) whistle. I di...

Re: A sad Lir whistle story

So after no further response from Lir after all of that, and the promise of them sending me another whistle head but not sending one, I decided it was time for me to either let the whistle sit as is, or see if I could make it more player friendly. I took a very sharp small knife and whittled off the...

Re: The search for "the holy whistle grale".

Hi Hauke, I'm curious as to which Burke high D and material made of that you had purchased. I have the aluminum Session model, as well as the narrow bore D in brass and aluminum. I also have many other high D's from different manufacturers. They each have their own traits that I don't always prefer ...

I got a tweaked high D from him directly from his website a couple of months ago, for what it's worth.

Another week has gone by, and no further reply back from Lir as far as sending the promised whistle head to replace the faulty one. Just a heads up to those that might be considering buying one of their whistles.

Re: A sad Lir whistle story

No response back from Sean at Lir yet as far as forwarding to me a tracking number on a replacement whistle head that he said was coming my way. Tomorrow is one week from his last message to me when he stated he would send me a tracking number within 48 hours. Yesterday (Tuesday) I had sent him an e...
