New book: Serious Ocarina Player

I have recently launched a new book called Serious Ocarina Player which covers everything involved with playing the Italian ocarina as a serious musical instrument. Well known player David Erik Ramos called it a ‘bible’ for ocarina players in his foreword. The book covers topics including a basic hi...

Re: 'Whistle' notation

But on the production side ... With the popular music typesetting packages in common use - Allegro, Sibelius, etc. - I find the proprietary graphical user interfaces awkward at best. Standard notation is still best suited to pen and staff paper. To me, the paradigm of a markup language and then ren...

'Whistle' notation

I've recently started attending a trad music class and some of the people there use 'whistle notation', a form of ABC but with enough varients from the 'standard' that I find it verry difficult to desiphor. In perticular it gives only notes with no indication of key, uses only caps and '/, to denote...

Re: Rolling up

In Grey Larson's whistle book, the roll is described as a 3 8th note orniment where the first note is played straight, the second is cut and the 3rd is struck, finishing on an 8th. After this 8th note, you can lift a finger to go to the next higher note. a (cut) a (strke) a b Or a short roll: (cut) ...

Re: Octave balance

Was experimenting with improving the tuning of my generation D and ended up taping 3 holes and filing out the top of the F# hole as the second octave note was almost a quarter tone flat. Yes on Generation D's the F# is often flat, which is OK if you want to play closer to Just Intonation, but not O...

Octave balance

Was experimenting with improving the tuning of my generation D and ended up taping 3 holes and filing out the top of the F# hole as the second octave note was almost a quarter tone flat. I also added a C natural thumb hole as priviously it could only be played in tune by half holing. In my opinion i...

Still, being around others playing this music is good for picking up tunes and ideas. Don't try to rush in.

Re: Unusual Session Instruments.

@Kristof Where have you seen ocarina players? Besides myself and Jack Campin, I'm not aware of many serious trad ocarina players. The ocarina is my main instrument, and I've been playing at a few sessions recently. It's very difficult to play irish music well. The pitch is highly unstable and is ver...

Re: Calling all geeks: wifi extender security question

Can you get any set up page, i.e. on http://192.168.1.1, which is the typical address.

I'd advise disabling WPS and setting it up manually if at all possible, I haven't been following this stuff recently, but WPS used to have some security issues.

Re: Band flute issues

I'm assumeing it's a Boehm system flute. The top notes are less sensitive to bad pads than the low beacouse leaks are cumulitive as you go down the tube, tending to make the low notes unplayable. My first flute was in similer (perhaps better) condition, yet I could still just about get a low D out o...

Re: scottish repertoire on A/D (14p) cornemuse?

I have a set of swane G's which have a nice tone to them. While they are pritty loud, they have a much less 'cutty'/shrill sound than the highland pipe, which I've never liked the sound of, and still don't. I mainly use the pipes for playing with the morris side, playing ocarina/flute otherwise. The...
